  • Vedas On Digestion Food Toxins ‘Ama’

Food has been given the highest respect in Hinduism.

    Yajur Veda speaks on Food.
    Food Quote by Yajur Veda

Taiitiriya Mantra Kosa deals with this subject in detail, in the form of instruction to Students.

It says. Annana Nindhyaath That Vratam’ Do not Insult Food for Food is what the beings are made of.

It goes on Annam Parisaksheetha, Annam Bahukurveetha’

Please refer Anandavalli Second Chapter Dweediya Prasna

The health of man is also considered very important.

Human body is where God Dwells and Body is  a Temple of God.

To maintain in its pure form free from toxins and abuse is one ‘s responsibility.

There are different kinds of penance,Tapas.

    Lord Krishna lists three.

    Saathivic, Rajasic and Tamasic.

He calls the torturing of the body by standing midst fire,  standing on one leg, going without food for a considerable period of time, as Asura,

as being inferior, to emphasize the importance of Human body.

This being the stand of the Hindu Scriptures, it is not surprising that Digestion is dealt with in detail in sporadic references( in many a place)  in the

    Vedas,Purans , Ayurveda and Smritis.

Food, what is good and how to eat, Lord Krishna explains in the Bhagavad Gita.

Refer my posts  on this subject.

Food that we eat is digested by the Jataraakni, a form of Fire.

    Fire has Ten Primary Forms.

    They are.

    1..Ordinary Fire.

    2.Lightning

    3.The Sun.

    4.Jataraagni(digestive fire).

    5.Destructive like forest fire.

6.Fire that is produced by the rubbing of sticks for performance of Homas.

7.Fire that is given to student at the time of his Upanayana

8.Fire that has been kept at Home by ancestor for domestic rituals.

9.The Southern Fire of ancestors used in certain rituals and

    10.The Funeral Fire for cremation.

Ayurveda lists thirteen fires, some Smritis  refer to Four, some Five.

Details provided towards the close of this Post.

Jataraagni is the Agni that is involved in Digestion.

    How the Jataragni Digests Food.

Jataraagni, in conjunction with the ten Forms of Air(Vaayu), performs the following functions of Digestion.

Along with Jataraagni Rechakam and Paasakam it cooks the food by heating, now explained by Science  Hypochondriac Acid, which incidentally has

the property of Heat and corrosion,

Dries the Food as  Shobakam( this comes out as waste from the Body),

Thaakaham, Burning the Food to create calories, Energy and

Plaavakam, Filling the cells with the essence of  Food,

With the help of Five Upa Vaayus, spreads the essence through the body.

These ten are the Modifications of Agni in the Human Body involved in Digestion.(Bhavanopanishad)

Toxins might be present in the food we eat.

Toxins are referred to as Ama.

“Ama is a word from the Sanskrit language,
the language of the Vedas and early Ayurveda
medical texts. It is a word we might nowadays
translate as ‘toxins’, but it is both more
elaborate and more subtle than the word
toxins might suggest. Literally the word ama
means ‘unripened’ or ‘uncooked’ and refers to
any product that passes through our digestive
system without being completely digested or
‘cooked’. We’ve all heard of environmental
toxins, but ama toxins are of our own making…

The fire bio-energy present in the stomach
and upper small intestine (jathara in Sanskrit)
is known as the jatharagni. Ayurveda has
revealed 13 different agnisin the human body,
however jatharagni is the most important, as
the other 12 are dependent upon it.

This ama is so insidious that even traditional
Sanskrit synonyms for disease, such as
‘amaya’, ring with its name. Ama is described
as being a particularly sticky, heavy, turbid and
foul-smelling substance. It has the tendency
to accumulate in the gastro-intestinal tract
and then overflow into the circulatory system,
to eventually deposit into weak tissues around
the body (for example joints, in the case of
ama-induced arthritis). These tissues may be
    genetically weak, nutritionally deprived, have
been damaged through injury or weakened by
negative emotions. Once lodged in these sites,
ama is well-placed to interrupt the
functioning and status of the affected tissue.
At that level of cellular interference, ama
deprives the cells of nourishment and energy,
and that’s how we’ll feel – dull, sluggish and
tired all the time. Also, the body’s waste
products will take on the characteristics of
ama – stools will become sticky strong smelling, urine becomes odorous and
cloudy, and perspiration (considered a waste
product or ‘mala’ in ayurveda) will also
    become particularly unpleasant in odour…

Why is it important to balance the agni
    (the digestive fire)?
    • The nutrition required by all living cells is
dependant on a balanced and complete
    digestive process.
    • Imbalanced agni leaves an unprocessed
residue which accumulates as toxic ama.
    • Digestive abilities on all levels (‘digestion’ of
all physical, sensory and mental experiences)
    rely on balanced agni.
    • Production of ojas will be improved (ojas
    supports our immunity, strength and
    experience of bliss).
    • This helps to maintain normal bodyweight
    for your body type.
How can I tell if my agni is balanced?
    SIGNS OF BALANCED AGNI
    • You will experience normal appetite at
    mealtimes
    • You will leave the table feeling comfortable,
refreshed and energised with a feeling of
satisfaction and no bloating or digestive
    distress
    • You will produce well-formed faeces
    without strong smell
    • You can eat all types of food without
    disturbances
    • Your complexion will glow.
    SIGNS OF IMBALANCED AGNI
    • If agni is excessive there may be a raging
appetite outside of mealtimes; if underactive
there may be complete lack of interest in food.
    • You might leave the table feeling heavy,
lethargic, bloated, gassy, or with heartburn
    and belching
    • Faeces will not be well-formed, will have
foul odour, tend to stick to the bowl and
    possibly contain undigested food.
    • Sensitivity to many foods, food intolerances
    and allergies.
    • Dull complexion.
Why did my agni become ‘imbalanced’?
    • Eating on the run, skipping meals
    • Eating while emotionally upset
    • Overconsumption of cold, liquid substances
    eg ice water”

    • Charaka has mentioned about 13 Agnis. Jatharagni – 1, Bhutagni – 5, Dhatvagni – 7 (Ch.Chi.15/38).[13]
    • According to Acharya Sushruta, five types of Agnis are illustrated, viz. Pachakagni, Ranjakagni, Alochakagni, Sadhakagni and Bhrajakagni. However, there is an indirect reference of fiveBhutagnis underlying in the brief description made to the transformation of food stuff. (Sh.Su.21/10.)[14]
    • Vagbhata has described different types Agni, viz. – Bhutagnis – 5,– Dhatvagnis – 7, –Dhoshagni – 3 and– Malagni – 3.
    • Sharangadhara has recognized five pittas only (Pachak, Bhrajak, Ranjak, Alochaka andSadhak) (Sha.Sa.Pu.Kh.-5/32).[15]
    • Bhavamishra has followed Acharya Charaka and Vagbhata (Bh.Pu.Kh.-3/169,180).[16]

Agni has been divided into 13 types according to the function and site of action. These are:

    1. Jatharagni – one Agni present in the stomach and duodenum.
    2. Bhutagni – five Agni from five basic elements.
    3. Dhatwagni – seven Agni present, one in each of the seven dhatus.

Accordingly, they are classified into three groups, namely Jatharagni, Bhutagni and Dhatvagni.”

  • Saudi Arabia Vedic, Vikramaditya’s Kingdom

Many lands and its people have forgotten their History.

Most of the histories of the Ancient Civilizations were either destroyed or doctored by the British to suit their Political aspirations and for the spreading

    of Christianity

    Empire of Vikramadhitya. Image
    Vikramadhitya Empire

Starting from Africa,, Vikings.Pagans, Romans, Polynesian Islands, you would find that the ancient history of these people are either lost or at best very hazy.

Muslims did not lag behind in this quest for colonization and zeal to spread their Religion, Islam.

Recently I found that the traces of the ancient Religion of the Africans have been erased and you would find absolutely no information on their Religion

    excepting about Christianity and Islam.

What little is known of the Great African Religion is doctored and is subject to some derogatory terms under the guise of describing it by

    “Syncretization” and the like.

I posted an article on this.

Now it seems that Saudi Arabia is also on this list.

Nothing seems to be there that was before the advent of Islam.

Arabs are described even today as uncouth, use flowery language, indecisive and are generally unreliable.

As if to compensate this patronizingly it is stated that they are very hospitable. that’s all.

Please read any book that has a Middle East Character, including the much acclaimed ‘Oh!Jerusalem

People of Saudi Arabia seem to know nothing about their History sans the ones  relating to Islam or during the Crusades!

They have taken to the description of their ancestors having been labelled a Nomads!

I have read some information on this subject and am sharing it here.

Seems to me that this tallies with the kingdoms and Land Mass describe din Hindu Purans.

Arabia is an abbreviation. The original word even today is Arbasthan. It originates in Arvasthan. As observed earlier Sanskrit “V” changes into “B”. Arva in Sanskrit means a horse. Arvasthan signifies a land of horses, and as we all know Arabia is famous for its horses.

In the 6th and 7th centuries A.D. a wave of effecting a complete break with the past spread over West Asia. All links with the past were broken, images smashed, scriptures destroyed, education discontinued and the entire West Asian region took a plunge in abysmal ignorance which lasted for centuries thereafter and perhaps persists to a certain extent even today because if in the whole world modern scientific and educational developments find stubborn and entrenched resistance anywhere it is in the West Asian countries. It is said that the late Saudi Arabia ruler could not permit a radio broadcasting station opened in his own capital because of opposition from his Maulavis. He then resorted to a stratagem. Once while he had his council of Maulavis in attendance he had a radio set switched on to a program of Koranic recitation broadcast from a small transmitting station set up earlier without much ado. The Maulavis were delighted, so goes the report, to hear the word of Allah coming to them as if from nowhere. The king told them that what objections could they have to a mechanism which broadcast the word of Allah. The Maulavis agreed and the small radio broadcasting project was at last ratified.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica and Séance Islamia the Arabs are ignorant of their own history of the pre-Muslim era. By a strange euphemism they call it a period of ignorance and darkness. Probably no other country in the world has deliberately written off a 2,500 year period of their own history by systematically stamping out and snapping all links with the past. They have wiped the memories of preMuslim era off their minds. So while they chose to remain ignorant of their past ironically enough it is they who dub the pre-Muslim era as a period of ignorance.

Fortunately we can still trace the history of that preIslamic Arabia. It is a well known adage that there is no such thing as foolproof destruction of all evidence. The pre-Islamic history of Arabia is the story of Indian Kshatriyas over that land, with the people following the Vedic way of life.

In our attempt to reconstruct the story of pre-Islamic Arabia we begin with the name of the country itself. As explained earlier the name is fully Sanskrit. Its central pilgrim centre, Mecca is also a Sanskrit name. Makha in Sanskrit signifies a sacrificial fire. Since Vedic fire worship was prevalent all over West Asia in pre-Islamic days Makha signifies the place which had an important shrine of fire worship.

Coinciding with the annual pilgrimage of huge bazaar used to spring up in Makha i.e. Mecca since times immemorial. The annual pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca is not at all an innovation but a continuation of the ancient pilgrimage. This fact is mentioned in encyclopedias.

    VIKRAMADITYA

Evidence is now available that the whole of Arabia was part of the great Indian King Vikramaditya’s vast empire. The extent of Vikramaditya’s empire is one of the main reasons for his world wide fame. Incidentally this also explains many intriguing features about Arabia. It could be that Vikramaditya himself had this peninsula named Arvasthan if he was the first Indian monarch to capture it and bring it under his sway.

The second intriguing aspect is the existence of a Shivalinga or the Mahadeva emblem in the Kaaba shrine in Mecca. Before going into further details about the ancient Vedic rituals and names still clinging to Muslim worship at Mecca we shall see what evidence we have about Arabia having formed part of Vikramaditya’s dominions.

ANTHOLOGY OF ANCIENT ARABIC POETRY: SAYAR-UL-OKUL

In Istanbul in Turkey, there is a famous library called Makteb-e-Sultania which is reputed to have the largest collection of ancient West Asian literature. In the Arabic Section of that library is an anthology of ancient Arabic poetry. That anthology was compiled from an earlier work in A.D. 1742 under the orders of the Turkish ruler Sultan Salim.

The ‘pages’ of that volume are made of HAREER – a kind of silk used for writing on. Each page has a decorative gilded border. It may be recalled that gilding pages of sacred books is an ancient custom associated with old Sanskrit scriptures found in Java and other places. The anthology itself is known as SAYAR-UL-OKUL. It is divided into three parts, the first part contains biographic details and the poetic compositions of pre-Islamic Arabian poets. The second part embodies accounts and verses of poets of the period beginning just after Prophet Mohammad up to the end of Banee- Ummayya dynasty. The third part deals with later poets up to the end of Khalifa Harun-al-Rashid’s times. Incidentally “Banee” means “Vanee” and Ummayya as in Krishnayya are Sanskrit names.

Abu Amir Abdul Asamai, a distinguished Arabian bard who was the Poet Laureate of Harun-al-Rashid’s court has compiled and edited the anthology.

The first modern edition of Sayar-ul-Okul anthology was printed and published in Berlin in A.D. 1864. A subsequent edition was published in Beirut in A.D. 1932. This work is regarded as the most important and authoritative anthology of ancient Arabic poetry. It throws considerable light on the social life, customs, manners and entertainment forms in ancient Arabia. The book also contains an elaborate description of the ancient Mecca shrine, the town and the annual fair known as OKAJ which used to be held there every year. This should convince readers that the annual Haj of the Muslims to the Kaaba is only a continuation of the old fair and not a new practice.

But the OKAJ fair was far from a carnival. It provided a forum for the elite and learned to discuss the social, religious, political, literary and other aspects of the Vedic culture then pervading Arabia. Sayar-ul-Okul asserts that the conclusions reached at those discussions were widely respected throughout Arabia. Mecca, therefore, followed the Varanasi tradition of providing a seat for important discussions among the learned while the masses congregated there for spiritual bliss. The principal shrines at both Varanasi in India and at Mecca in Arvasthan were Shiva temples. Even to this day the central object of veneration at both Mecca and Varanasi continues to be the ancient Mahadeva emblems. It is the Shankara stone which Muslim pilgrims reverently touch and kiss in the Kaaba.

    ENTRY OF NON-MUSLIMS FORBIDDEN

A few miles away from Mecca is a big signboard which forbids entry to any non-Muslim in the area. This is a reminder of the days when the Shrine was stormed and captured solely for the newly established faith of Islam. The object obviously was to prevent its recapture.

As the pilgrim proceeds towards Mecca he is asked to shave his head and beard and to don a special sacred attire. This consists of two seamless sheets of white cloth. One is to be worn round the waist and the other over the shoulders. Both these rites are remnants of the old Vedic practice of entering Hindu shrines, clean shaven and with holy seamless spotless white sheets.

The main shrine in Mecca which houses the Shiva emblem is known as the Kaaba. It is clothed in a black shroud. This custom could also originate from the days when it was thought necessary to discourage its recapture. According to encyclopedias Britannica and Islamia the Kaaba had 360 images. Traditional accounts mention that one of the deities among the 360 destroyed, when the shrine was stormed, was that ofSaturn, another was of the moon and yet another was one called Allah. In India the practice of Navagraha puja that is worship of the nine planets is still in vogue. Two of these nine are the Saturn and the moon. Besides, the moon is always associated with Lord Shankara. A Crescent is always painted across the forehead of the Shiva emblem. Since the presiding deity at the Kaaba shrine was Lord Shiva i.e. Shankara, the crescent was also painted on it. It is that crescent which is now adopted as a religious symbol of Islam. Another Hindu tradition is that wherever there is a Shiva shrine the sacred stream of Ganga that is the Ganges must also co-exist. True to that tradition a sacred fount exists near the Kasba. Its water is held sacred because it was regarded as but another Ganga since pre-Islamic times. Muslim pilgrims visiting the Kaaba shrine go around it seven times. In no other mosque does this perambulation prevail. Hindus invariably perambulate around their shrines. This is yet another proof that the Kaaba shrine is a pre-Islamic Shiva temple where the Hindu practice of perambulation is still meticulously observed.

‘According to tradition, Chandragupta II achieved power by assassinating a weak elder brother. Inheriting a large empire, he continued the policy of his father, Samudra Gupta, by extending control over neighbouring territories. From 388 to 409 he subjugated Gujarat, the region north of Bombay (Mumbai), Saurastra (now Saurashtra), in western India, and Malwa, with its capital at Ujjain. These territories were ruled by Shaka chiefs, whose ancestors were Scythian tribes from the regions around Lake Balkhash (Balqash) in Kazakhstan. To strengthen his southern flank, he arranged a marriage between his daughter Prabhavati and Rudrasena II, king of the Vakatakas. When Rudrasena died, Prabhavati acted as regent for her sons, thereby increasing Gupta influence in the south. The emperor may also have made a matrimonial alliance with a dynasty in Mysore. He is almost certainly the King Chandra eulogized in the Sanskrit inscription on the iron pillar in the Qūwat al-Islām mosque in Delhi.

  • Laws Of Motion Rig Veda Full Moon Image Verses

I am providing Newton’s Laws of Motion and the Rig Vedic Verses,Hinduism, of over Five Thousand Years.

    Full Moon During Vedic Period
Below are a number of sky-maps, all with the same legend and in the same format – the red arc is the ecliptic; the constellation boundaries are marked in green; the names of the constellations and the bright stars visible very easily with naked eyes are marked in yellow and red. The first sky map show how the night sky looked like on 10th April, 2000 BC in Arkaim. It was just a day before the full moon nearest to Vernal Equinox. Some of the lunar mansions with very bright stars like Spica, Arcturus, Antares and Shaula are marked on the ecliptic. In 2000 BC Thuban of the Draco constellation was very close to being the Polestar (it was the Polestar around 2800 BC). Due to the precession of equinoxes, discussed in details earlier, different stars, all arranged in a circle, become Polestars at various points of time. Thuban (2800 BC), Polaris (now) and Vega (12000 BC & 14000 AD) are marked in the sky-map. On this particular day, 10th April, the moon is in the nakshatra Anuradha. Newton’s Laws of Motion.

    1. First law: When viewed in an inertial reference frame, an object either remains at rest or continues to move at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force.[2][3]
    2. Second lawF = ma. The vector sum of the forces F on an object is equal to the mass m of that object multiplied by the accelerationvector a of the object.
    3. Third law: When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first body.

    Still simpler.

    I. Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.

II. The relationship between an object’s mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F = ma. Acceleration and force are vectors (as indicated by their symbols being displayed in slant bold font); in this law the direction of the force vector is the same as the direction of the acceleration vector.

III. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Rig Vedic Verses on Laws of Motion.

The sun has tied Earth and other planets through attraction and moves them around itself as if a trainer moves newly trained horses around itself holding their reins.”
The first one is Rigveda 10.149.1.This is one of the several Mantras in Vedas that assert that planets move around sun. It says:
    In this mantra,
    Savita = Sun
    Yantraih = through reins
    Prithiveem = Earth
    Aramnaat = Ties
Dyaam Andahat = Other planets in sky as well
    Atoorte = Unbreakable
    Baddham = Holds
Ashwam Iv Adhukshat = Like horses.

The second one Rigveda 8.12.28 details this motion of planet

“All planets remain stable because as they come closer to sun due to attraction, their speed of coming closer increases proportionately.”

    In this Mantra,
    Yada Te = When they
Haryataa = Come closer through attraction
    Hari = Closeness
    Vaavridhate = Increases proportionately
    Divedive = continuously
Vishwa Bhuvani = planets of the world
    Aditte = eventually
    Yemire = remain stable

(The reference to sun comes from rest of the Mantras in this Sukta before and after this mantra)

    The mantra clearly states that:

    1. Motion of planets around the sun is not circular, even though sun is the central force causing planets to move (Refer previous mantra 10.149.1)

    2. The motion of planets is such that Velocity of planets is in inverse relation with the distance between planet and sun.

It can be easily shown with the help of Newton’s Second Law that, for a planet revolving around sun in an elliptical orbit, having distance ‘r’ with sun and angle ‘θ’ made between length ‘r’ and any fixed axis, at any instant, following holds true

From the above, it can be easily shown that derivative of the product of square of distance between sun and planet and rate of change of angle θ, with respect to time, is zero. And thus following relation is obtained (with h as a constant)

Interestingly, the above relation is nothing but the conservation of angular momentum, observed in cases involving Central Forces! If you replace angular velocity with linear velocity, it leads exactly to the same principle that the Vedic mantra 8.12.28 asserts – that velocity of planets is inversely related to distance from sun!

  • Bells Theorem Hinduism Quantum Mechanics

Hinduism states that things are not what they seem.

Advaita interpretation of the Vedas say that what you see or perceive is because of your ignorance of Reality.

The Reality is One and you are not different from it.

You are conditioned by ignorance and your limitations which includes Space and Time , where as the Reality is beyond both of the

Vaisheshika Theory of Atoms  says it differently.

Atoms are configured in various permutations and combinations to present a view of different objects, that is the objects are differ because of the

different structure of the Atoms constituting objects.

Let us look this from practical Life.

What you perceive is dependent on where you are , what you are and what your mental attitude is.

For the same set of Object, each of us have a different perception.

And the Attributes through which we recognize them  are, when they are broken down mean nothing.

For example, the Attributes of a Rose.

A rose is known by its smell, color, climates in which they are grown are some of the Attributes we have for a Rose.

If you analyze these Attributes, you shall find they lead to nothing as such to recognize Rose as a Rose.

The Rose we recognize is some thing more than the Attributes we ascribe.

Even with out these Attributes we recognize a Rose.

For more on this, please read my Posts on Perception, Do we see what we really see.

    Another example.

We are familiar with Ultra Slow Motion cameras used in Cricket Matches.

Umpires use this to determine to take decisions on the field.

What is seen cleanly as ‘out’  is ‘not out’, when you refer these slow motion replays.

Which fact that is presented is correct?

    Both are correct .

It depends on the conditions and the perspective.

This is what Hinduism has said about Five Thousand years ago.

Quantum Theory is now nearing it, n , but not quite.

Bells Theorem  proves that Quantum Mechanics can not explain all the events by their theory alone.

    Exactly what the Vedas say.

I am providing some Links and excerpts to refer.

    Hinduism and Bell's Theory.
    Static Universe bell’s Theory

No physical theory of local hidden variables can ever reproduce all of the predictions of quantum mechanics”

There are variants of the Theorem with different meanings of “Local Realistic.” In John S. Bell‘s pioneering paper of 1964 the realism consisted in postulating in addition to the quantum state a “complete state”, which determines the results of measurements on the system, either by assigning a value to the measured quantity that is revealed by the measurement regardless of the details of the measurement procedure, or by enabling the system to elicit a definite response whenever it is measured, but a response which may depend on the macroscopic features of the experimental arrangement or even on the complete state of the system together with that arrangement. Locality is a condition on composite systems with spatially separated constituents, requiring an operator which is the product of operators associated with the individual constituents to be assigned a value which is the product of the values assigned to the factors, and requiring the value assigned to an operator associated with an individual constituent to be independent of what is measured on any other constituent. From his assumptions Bell proved an inequality (the prototype of “Bell’s Inequality”) which is violated by the Quantum Mechanical predictions made from an entangled state of the composite system. In other variants the complete state assigns probabilities to the possible results of measurements of the operators rather than determining which result will be obtained, and nevertheless inequalities are derivable; and still other variants dispense with inequalities. The incompatibility of Local Realistic Theories with Quantum Mechanics permits adjudication by experiments, some of which are described here. Most of the dozens of experiments performed so far have favored Quantum Mechanics, but not decisively because of the “detection loophole” or the “communication loophole.”

Let me put it from a common example.

All of us take decisions based on Available Data.

We do not have all the choices to enable us to decide on an issue.

We take decisions based on the Data, Information that is made available to us and we decide.

This means the decisions we make are made on the basis of information available or made to be available to us and not All the Information.

Hence our decisions, based on Choices are not fully correct as they have been preset with the limitations of the Choices being made available to us.

Please read my post on Choice.

“If the statistical predictions of quantum theory are true, an objective universe is incompatible with the law of local causes.”

Although formidable at first glance, Bell’s Theorem seems simpler once key terms are understood.

First, an “objective universe” is simply one that exists apart from our consciousness.

In 1935, Albert Einstein, together with Nathan Rosen and Boris Podolsky proposed through flawless mathematical reasoning that if the quantum theory were correct, then ‘A change in the spin of one particle in a two particle system would affect its twin simultaneously, even if the two had been widely separated in the meantime’. And ‘simultaneous’ is a dirty word in the theory of special relativity, which forbids the transmission of any signal faster than the speed of light. Obviously, a signal telling the particle ‘what to do’ would have to travel faster than the speed of light if instantaneous changes were to occur between the two particles.

The dilemma into which Einstein, Rosen and Podolsky dragged the quantum theory was a profound one, coming to be known as The ERP Effect.

In 1964 Bell’s Theorem emerged as a proof that Einstein’s impossible proposition did in fact hold true: instantaneous changes in widely separated systems did occur.

In 1972, Clauser confirmed the statistical predictions of quantum mechanics, working with an elaborate system involving photons, calcite crystals, and photo multiplier tubes The experiment has since been run several times with the same consistent results; Bell’s Theorem stands solid.

    The implications of Bell’s theorem
    are practically unthinkable

Even for the physicists involved, the implications of Bell’s Theorem are practically unthinkable. Mathematics and experimentation have taken us where our logical mind cannot go. Imagine, two particles once in contact, separated even to the ends of the universe, change instantaneously when a change in one of them occurs!

Slowly, new ideas are emerging to explain these unthinkable occurrences. One view is that, in some unexplainable way, the separated particles are still in contact although separated in space. This is the suggestion of the French physicist Bernard D’Espagnat. In 1979, writing about quantum reality, he said that “the entire notion of an external, fixed, objective world now lies in conflict not only with quantum theory, but in facts drawn from actual experiments…. in some sense all these objects constitute an indivisible whole.”

Physicist Jack Sarfatti of the Physics/Consciousness Research Group proposes that no actual energy-requiring signal is transmitted between the distant objects, but ‘information’ is transmitted instead. Thus no violation of Einstein’s special theory of relativity occurs. Exactly what this information is is unclear, and it is a strange thing which might travel instantly and require no energy to do so.

Nic Herbert, a physicist who heads the C-Life Institute, suggests that we have merely discovered an elemental oneness of the world. This oneness cannot be diminished by spatial separation. An invisible wholeness unites the objects that are given birth in the universe, and it is this wholeness that we have stumbled into through modern experimental methods. Herbert alludes to the words of the poet Charles Williams: “Separation without separateness, reality without rift.”
