Vishnu Once in 6480 Years Astronomy Precession Equinoxes

Hinduism and Indian Philosophy have Scared Texts and legends.

The texts are both allegorical and facts.

For instance, the description of Patala refers to the physical location of a place inside/underneath the earth, it also denotes a stage of mental degradation.

Pole Star ,Dhruva Nakshatra.Precssion of Equinoxes.jpg
Pole Star ,Dhruva Nakshatra.Precssion of Equinoxes.

Similarly the Saptha Rishi Mandal, or the Great Bear Constellation is a fact and it also refers to the Rishis of yore.

The Pole Star is Dhruva. the Loka granted by Vishnu to the Child Dhruva.

The astronomical events are cloaked in legends and Puranas.

Sishumara of the Sun with the positions of the Stars that change.jpg.
Sishumara of the Sun with the positions of the Stars that change.

What is unique is that they are real and also allegorical in describing celestial events.

Let us look into some of these.

The Post of Indra, the chief of Devas and Dhruva is ex officio.

Indra changes in every Yuga, that is the Post of Indra is constant while the person who occupies the place changes.

It is said that who does certain Yagas like the Aswamedha Yagas successfully becomes an Indra, dethroning the present incumbent.

Severe penance also warrants these results.

So Indra disturbs those who engage in these activities.

    Now coming to Astronomy.

Time takes a toll on everything in the Universe.

If affects people and non living things.

People age so  also the Rocks etc.

There are two aspects of Time, one is so minute that you do not notice it and the changes effected by it, like Micro seconds, nano seconds and seconds, minutes.

Even changes that occur hourly can be known only with the help of special instruments.

The other aspect of Time is it is so huge to be comprehended, like a light year or AU, Astronomical Unit that is equal to the distance traveled by Light in a Year.

One can not see this as this is a huge number and one may not be alive to see the change by oneself.

Such huge numbers are involved in the Universe in respect of formation of Stars,Galaxies .

Now all of us know the Earth has two movements, one spinning on its own Axis and another moving around the Sun.

The movement around the Sun’s signs by the earth is so slow that it is not noticeable.

Also because of the movement of the Earth and the Stars and other Celestial objects these objects change their  relative places.

To put it simply, Stars change positions as also the Earth, taking the Sun as a reference point.

That the Sun also moves and there are many Suns is a different issue and I shall be posting on the implications.

This movement of the Earth in the Zodiacal Signs of the Sun is called the Precession of the Equinoxes.

Put it simply the Stars change places over a period of Time(long time)

The Pole Star, the Dhruva Nakshatra is taken as a reference in Hinduism and it changes its place once in approximately 26000 years.

This corresponds to one basic Yuga, the Kali Yuga.

According to Vishnu Purana Dhruva changes  every Yuga like Indra, Saptha Rishis(Great Bear Constellation), along with the others in the Universe .

And the ten Avatars of Vishnu represent these Celestial changes.

“THE PRECESSION OF THE EQUINOXES is what determines the movement of the Ages backwards through the constellations. It can be understood through the analogy of the Earth spinning like a top, with the Sun and Moon pulling on its equatorial bulge. This gravitational influence creates a wobble, resulting in the precession or the shifting of the equinoctial points with respect to the stars. The north celestial pole describes a small circle with a radius of 23.5 degrees around the north ecliptic pole, with a consequent westward drift of the equinoxes – the two points where the celestial equator crosses the ecliptic. This is not to be confused with the movement of the Earth respective to the ecliptic of the Sun that occurs every year around March 21st, a movement that ever recurs on that date. What is here spoken of is the greater circle upon which the “ayanamsha” or ‘ascendant of the Earth’ is traced, and which coincides with the annual equinoctial point every 25,920 years. Set against the backdrop of the Zodiac, it takes the Earth 25, 920 years to make a “Complete Round” of the 12 astrological signs and 2,160 years to complete one astrological Age….

The Precessional Cycle was described by the Greek astronomer Hipparchus, in the Second century BC. but it seems to have been known in the ancient Vedic culture as well. In past millennia, astrologer priests known as Rishis developed precise formulas for calculating the cosmic cycles, and wove their celestial equations into the fabric of their myths and legends. Principal among these cosmological parables was the “Line of Ten Avatars”. According to tradition, Vishnu, one of the principle deities of the Hindu trinity takes birth at particular points in the cosmic cycle which correspond to the earth’s passage through the ‘Fixed’ zodiacal ages. Vishnu appears every 6,480 years at the commencement of the signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. He appears at the behest of a suffering world and comes to destroy evil and injustice and reestablish the eternal truths of the Sanatana Dharma. The Bhagavad Gita, one of India’s most sacred scriptures, reveals something of this cosmic process in Krishna’s dialogue with Arjuna. Krishna tells his disciple:

‘Whenever the world declineth in virtue and righteousness; and vice and injustice mount the throne, then cometh I, the Lord and revisit my world in visible form, and mingleth as a man with men, and by my influence and teachings do I destroy the evil and injustice and reestablish virtue and righteousness. Many times have I thus appeared, and many times hereafter shall I come again.’…

  • Front Vishnu Back Mohini Ryali Mohini Avatar Temple

Some count the Mohini Avatar of Lord Vishnu among the popular Avatars of  Lord Vishnu.

There are no temples for the Mohini Avatar, excepting the ones at Mhalasa in Ponda,Goa and at Ryali East Godavari District,Andhra Pradesh.

    Jagan Mohini Keshavaswamy Temple Gopura,Ryali
    Jagan Mohini Keshavaswamy Temple

The Mhalasa Temple is also reported to be temple of an Amsa of Kaali , with Uma and Lakshmi combined.

So the Mohini Avatar Temple ,Ryali seems to be the only temple for Mohini Avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu took this Avatar to distribute the Amrutha,Nectar to the Devas at the cost of the Asuras who had also contributed in the churning of the Ksheera Sagara, Milky Ocean, Samudramanathan.

Lord Shiva fell in love Mohini,  married Her and Ayyappa,Sastha was born.

    How To reach Ryali.

Ryali is 24 Km from Rajamundry.

    Jaganmohini Keshava Temple Ryali.jpg

    Airport.Rajamundry.

    Railway Station.Rajamundry.

    Bus Station.Rajamundry.

The Temple has a single stone Idol of Lord Vishnu(5 feet).

The Idol looks s Vishnu from the front and as Mohini from the rear view.

The flow of Akasha Ganga at the feet of Sri Maha Vishnu can be seen here. The image of the Lord is an exquisite piece of sculpture, which is considered to be the only one of its kind in India. The figure in front is ‘Kesava’ or ‘Keshava’, and on the reverse is the female attire with a hair-do representing ‘Jaganmohini’.

Carved in black stone, the image of the deity excites admiration.

The image stands at a height of 5ft and the front portion, besides the face of Kesava, contains sculptural representations of ‘Dasavatara’ (ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu).

At the feet of the image is the figure of Goddess Ganga, from which drops of water trickle down throughout the day. This is considered a rare phenomenon. Though small, the shrine presents a grand appearance artistically.

The priests at the temple show the idol in the light of burning camphor and explain the idol of the god in detail.

There is a temple of Lord Shiva in front of Lord Jagan Mohini Kesava Swamy temple.

Lord Shiva is known as Sri Uma Kamandalesara Swamy here.

The Legend of these two temples relates to Samudra Mathanam.

The Idol is Swayambhu it means, it has formed on its own where visitors can see the Ganga i.e. water coming out between the two legs of the deity.

The shrine of Sri Jagan Mohini Keshava Swamy is made up of single stone (Salagrama Ekashila – 5 feet height and 3ft width).

This place was  a wild forest during 11th century and was ruled by Cholas.

Raja Vikrama Deva originally constructed a small temple during 11th century and later renovated.

    Shiva Marries Mohini.

while Devathas (divine angels) and Rakshasas (devils) were quarrelling over sharing of holy divine NECTAR (Amrutham) Lord Vishnu came to the rescue of Devathas in the guise of Mohini and convinced both rival groups promising to distribute holy divine nectar in equal share. But in the interest of universal peace and welfare of sages, holy and divine nectar was distributed among the Devathas alone and then Mohini disappeared. Lord Eshwara (Shiva) sees Mohini and falls in love with her. He chased her for getting for a while the presence of his consort Parvathi Devi. It is general belief that this a holy incident was the result of birth of Lord Ayyappa Swamy. One flower from the plait of Mohini fell down and it was smelt by Lord Siva then he surprisingly found Sri Maha Vishnu in the form of Mohini and felt shy for his behavior. The place where the flower from the plait of Mohini fell is named as RYALI (the Telugu meaning of Fall)

This place known as Ryali for the above reason became abode of Lord Siva and Sri Mahavishnu with the form of Mohini on backside. Lord Brahma consecrated the Sivalingam with his Kamandalam and hence Lord Siva at Ryali is worshipped as Uma Kamandaleswra Swamy. Sri Maha Vishnu in the form of Mohini in the back side is worshipped as Sri Jagan Mohini Kesava Swamy. Both Siva and Vishnu temples are located facing each other. This is very rare feature at Ryali where Lord Vishnu and Lord Siva facing each other in East and West Direction.
There is also general belief that water will not flow out of Siva temple after the deity will absorb performing pooja to the deity and all the water.

  • Vishnu’s Child Cursed To Death by Lakshmi. Somaskantha

Lord Vishnu, without Lakshmi, desirous of Male child worshiped Lord Shiva at Tiruvarur.

He was blessed with a Male child, Kaama or Manmatha, the God of Love/Lust.

Angered at being omitted Lakshmi cursed Vishnu that His son would be burnt by Shiva.

    Somaskanda.Shiva, Skanda and Parvati.jpg
    Somaskanda.Shiva, Skanda and Parvati.

Upon realization of the curse, an aggrieved Vishnu created a composite image featuring Shiva, Uma and Skanda (Somaskanda – symbolic of fertility) and offered worship to it.

Parvati alleviated the curse placed on him stating that despite being burnt to death, Kaama would live on to create the forces of attraction between the male and the female that would ensure the continuation of the human race.

There is no other children of Vishnu or Vishnu and Lakshmi, from the Purarnic references.

  • Vishnu’s Jasmine Like Scar Sri Vathsam Description By Krishna

The description of Vishnu is not found in the Vedas .

Narayana Suktham speaks of Narayana as the Principle, it may be noted that Narayana is different from Vishnu.

    Sri Vatsam of balaji, Tirupati.jpgi.
    Balaji Tirupati,Srivathsam is visible.

Vishnu Suktham again describes the principle of Vishnu.

Sketchy description of Vishnu in Human form is found in the Puranas, especially in the Vishnu Purana,

Dhuruva Stuthi describes Vishnu’s Form, but does not provide details about His Ornaments and marks .

Gopala Uttara Tapini Upanishad( 75-78) has the first reference to Lord Vishnu’s Form.

‘His feet bear the auspicious signs of a celestial standard, a royal parasol.

His chest is adorned by srivatsa locks of hair, the brilliantly shining kaustubha gem and rows of forest-flower garlands (vanamala).

His four hands hold shankha  (conch), chakra (discus), gada (mace) and padma  (lotus).

He is adorned with armlets, garlands, jewels, diadem and earrings shaped like makara the sea monster (makara-kundala )

His form is enchanting and auspicious (divya mangala vigraha); radiant like the sharad -full moon ; his eyes glow  like blue lotus blossoming  amidst the

pool of clear water ; his brows like a well strung bow; his nose slender  and shapely like the petals of champak flower ; the  serene, cool, gentle smile, pure

like cow’s milk , dancing on his full and well shaped red lips  lights up the whole world ; his chin firm and well proportioned; his throat bright and sound

shaped like a conch; the tilaka adorning his forehead between the brows is luminous like crescent moon in a clear cloudless sky; his arms long , strong and

supple like the elephant’s trunk; his chest wide , strong and healthy; he is adorned with golden-hue–silk garments (pitambara);he is richly and tastefully

ornamented; and he is the very embodiment of all the grace , beauty and joy in the universe.

In his mind one should meditate on Me standing on
the blossomed eight-petaled lotus of the heart, My two
feet marked with conchshell, flag and umbrella, MY
chest marked with srivatsa and splendid with the
kautabha gem, My four arms holding the conch, cakr
    a, mace, and sarnga bow,
    My arms decorated with
    armlets. MY neck splendid with
a flower garland, My head circled
by a splendid crown, My ears
    decorated with glistening shark-
    shaped earrings, MY form splendid
and handsome, holding a flute and
    buffalo-horn bugle, and granting
fearlessness to the devotees.’Gpala Tapini Upanishad 75 to 78)

How Sri Vathsam came into Being.

Once the foot of Trivikrama came to the place where Bharadwaaja Maharishi was performing Japam, he struck on the chest of VishNu with a handful of water. The spot where he was hit became the mole and this mole is called Srivatsam( Mahaabhaaratham Saanthi Parvam 3.5.2 vide Page 401 of Notes on BalakaaNDam of Vaalmiki Ramayanam by Sri C.R. Srinivasa Iyengar).

There is another interpretation found in the same Santhi Parva 3.5.2. According to this, on one of the several occasions in which Lord Siva came to fight with Mahavishnu, he aimed his trident (Soolam) at the latter creating a scar on Vishnu’s chest and this scar is Srivatsam.

There is also the view that Lakshmi resdies in the Sri Vathsam.

We find a near complete description of Lord Vishnu in the Vishnu Sahasranama.
