  • Vishnu Attempts Suicide First Vamana Avatar

Sage Kasyapa had a wife Dhanu.

They had a son named Dundhu.

Dundhu was granted the boon of  remaining Deathless by Indra, who was happy with Dundhu’s penance.

Dhundhu attacked Indra to capture Indra Loka and Indra, along with the Devas ,rushed to Brahma Loka, the Abode of Brahma.

On being advised that he needed the help of Sukracharya, the Asura Guru, Dundhu obtained Sukracharya’s help.

Sukracharya advised Dhundu to perform 100 Aswamedha Yagas.

    Dhundhu started performing the Yaga.

Scared Devas, catching the whiff of the Homa Smoke, rushed to Vishnu seeking  refuge in Him.

Vishnu in took the form of  Vamana (Midget) and pretended to commit suicide near the place where the Yaga was being conducted.

The Brahmins who were conducting the Yaga,  saved the Brahmin boy Vamana  and asked him the reason for his attempted suicide.

Vamana(Vishnu) told them that he was the second son of Prabasa.

After the death of Prabasa, Vamana added that his brother Nethrabasa refused to give him  his share of the property saying that Midgets,Physically disabled and Eunuchs were not  entitled to property Rights.

So , Vamana said that he wanted to commit suicide.

The Brahmins requested Dhundu to provide help to Vamana.

Dhundu informed Vamana that he would give whatever Vamana wanted.

Vamana replied that he was not greedy and wanted only land equivalent to his three steps.

    Dhundu agreed.

Vamana grew in size, measured the Earthh with one step, Heavens by the second.

Angered that he did not have a place to place his third step, he fell on Dhundu .

Unable to bear Vamana’s weight, Dhundu fell on the ground and Vishnu buried him in the sand and built a Grave.

This, Vamana Purana , declares is the First Vamana Avatara.

  • Ganges Vishnu’s Feet Brahma’s Palm Shiva’s Head

One of the reasons why the Ganges is revered in India is the fact that it is sanctified by the feet of Lord Vishnu, palm of Brahma and Head of Shiva.

When Lord Vishnu took the form of Trivikrama during Vamana Avatar, He scaled the Heavens and Brahma washed His feet with His Palm.

    Trivikrama, and Shiva with Ganges.
Trivikrama, and Shiva with Ganges. Image source. http://memyinnerthoughts.blogspot.in/2014/06/486-lets-welcome-south-west-monsoon.html

And when Bhgiratha prayed Shiva to release Ganges from His Head, to wash away the sins of His forefathes.the Sagara Puthras, who were cursed by Kapila(Avatar of Vishnu), the Ganges flowed from Shiva’s Head.

During Vamana Avatar, Ganges touched Shiva’s head as it fell down through Mrityuloka.

We find Vishnu pada in Gaya,Rishikesh even today.

    And,

This lotus feet of Narayana was cleansed by the Brahma (In Vamana avatara of lord Vishnu, while measuring the whole universe the second step, Vishnu went to Sathya loka (residence of Brahma, the four-headed God).

With this unexpected Guest of lord’s feet, Brahma astonished and immediately started cleansing lord’s feet by taking the vedas as water in his kamandalam. That water is flowing as ‘Ganga’). This holy feet belong to Brahmam” ( or Para Brahmam, the Supreme Lord or God-head).

    2) Srimad Bhagavatam:

SB 8.21.1: Sukadeva Gosvmi continued: When Lord Brahma, who was born of a lotus flower, saw that the effulgence of his residence, Brahmaloka, had been reduced by the glaring effulgence from the toenails of Lord Vamanadeva, he approached the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Lord Brahma was accompanied by all the great sages, headed by Marici, and by yogis like Sanandana, but in the presence of that glaring effulgence, O King, even Lord Brahma and his associates seemed insignificant.

    Srimad Bhagavatam 8.21.4:

    ‘dhatuh kamandalu jalam tad urukramasya
    padavanejana pavitrataya narendra
svardhuny abhun nabhasi sa pataiī nimarsṭi
    loka trayaḿ bhagavato visadeva kirtih’

    Meaning:

O King, the water from Lord Brahma’s kamandalu washed the lotus feet of Lord Vamanadeva, who is known as Urukrama, the wonderful actor. Thus that water became so pure that it was transformed into the water of the Ganges, which went flowing down from the sky, purifying the three worlds like the pure fame of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.(Yhoo answers)

  • Where Vamana Took His First Step Thrikkakara

Vamana or Trivikrama Avatara of Lord Vishnu was the first wholly Human  Avatar and it as the first Avatar in Treta Yuga.

The Chief of the Devas, Indra felt threatened by Mahabali who conquered the three worlds.

Lord Vishnu took the Avatar of a Brahmin midget and requested Mahabali for the grant of land measured by his three feet, when Mahabali conducted a Yaga.

Despite his Guru’s advice that the midget was none other than Lord Vishnu, Mahabali, to keep up his word granted the boy’s wish.

    Chuthuvilakku at Thrikkakkara Vamana Temple.jpg

The midget grew huge measured the earth with one step, the Heavens with another and asked for a place for the third step.

Mahabali  bowed His head and Lord Vishnu kept His foot on his head.

Vamana as He measured the world is called Trivikrama, One who Has won the three worlds.

He blessed Mahabali and granted his desire to visit his Kingdom once in a year.

This day is celebrated as Onam festival in Kerala.

The exact place where Lord Vamana took His first step is in Kerala.at Thirikakara.

It is located 10 km north-east of Ernakulam between ThrissurErnakulam highway (NH 47),

This is one of the 10 Vaishnava Divya Desams.

The celebration of the Onam festival is the main religious event in the temple. The festival is celebrated over a period of ten days in the Malayalam month of Chingam. The temple is considered to be the centre of Onam celebrations over the world, as Thrikkakara is considered to have been the abode of the King Mahabali. The temple houses the main deity Lord Vamana.During the Onam celebration period, a pyramidal statue symbolizing Lord Vamana is installed as a symbol of honour at all other sites of the celebration, and named Onathappan or Thrikkakara-appan. The temple is the site at which the king Mahabali is said to have been sent to the underworld Patala by Lord Vamana with his foot, hence marking the genesis of the Onam festival. The etymology of the name Thrikkakara (‘place of the holy foot’) is also derived this way.

During the period of 10 days, the temple showcases performances in several cultural arts such as Chakyar Koothu, Ottamthullal, Kathakali and Patakam [9] as well as dance and musical performances such as Panchavadyam and Thayambaka. Each day also has its own ceremonial significance, and the temple authorities perform several ceremonial rites which involve the main deity and the other deities housed at the temple (namely Lord Ayyapa, Devi, Lord Krishna and Rakshassu). The Shiva temple located beside the main temple is also involved in these rites.

  • Hymn For Cancer Amrutha Sanjeevana Dhanvathri Stuthi

Some diseases like Cancer are more worrisome.

Despite various treatments like Chemotherapy,Radiation Therapy, the concern persists.

May be what I say is unpalatable, the fact is that of the efficacy of these treatments and the cure they are likely to effect, Doctors are as much in the dark as the patients, the patients admit the fact, Doctors do not admit it openly.

In these cases, one turns to God.

I have posted The Mrutha Sanjeevani Mantra to get relief from Mental stress and tensions,

This is addressed to Lord Shiva.

Lord Dhanvantri, the First Doctor, an Avatar of Vishnu, who rose from the Ocean is the Perfect source to address these types of health issues.

  • Where Parasuram’s Axe Fell Parasuram Kund Arunachal

Parasurama was an Avatar of Lord Visnhu.

It is one of the rare occasions The Lord Vishu took the Avatar as a Brahmin, the other being Vamana among the Twelve Avatars.

He had his Mother’s head cut by himself at the behest of his Mother,

She later became to be worshiped as Renukamba containing  her body parts. other than the head, while  Mariamman,  worshiped in Tamil Nadu, containing her Head.

Parasurama was known for Hir Archery and his specialty was Pasupathastra, equivalent to modern Neutron Bomb.

He took a vow o kill every Kshatriya as a revenge for Karhaviryajunas beheading of Jamadagi, Parasurama’s Father.

He lost the battle against Lord Ram, while his battle against Bhishma was equal(Read my post-Clash of the Titans, Bhishma and Parasurama.

Parasurama lived during the Ramayana and Mahabharata period as well.

    His weapon was Axe.

The Axe would not fall from his hands, after he had killed his mother.

It fell off at Parashuram Kund in Arunachal Pradesh.

Parashuram Kund is in Arunachal Pradesh, situated on the Brahmaputra plateau in the lower reaches of the north of Tezu in Lohit District, has been a

source of spiritual inspiration of a multitude of devotees since time immemorial.

    Legend.

“One day,Renuka, mother of Parashuram, went to fetch water.

While returning, she felt drawn towards King Chitranatha playing with celestial nymphs.

Consequently, she was late in returning to the ashram.

Jamadagni, her husband, worried over her delay as it was getting late for the midday worship.

On perceiving through his divine power the reason for her delay, Jamadagni was so enraged that, on her arrival, he asked his sons to kill her.

None of his six sons except Parashuram could oblige. He immediately beheaded his mother.

The handle of the axe which he used, however, clung to his hand. Pleased with his son,

Jamadagni desired Parashuram to ask for any boon.

Parashuram asked six boons and one was for the immediate recovery of his mother.

However, this did not wipe out his sin.

He was told that the only way to wash off his sin was by taking a dip in the Brahma Kund.

Only then would the axe stuck to his hand drop.

Parashuram ultimately came to the Brahma Kund in present Lohit District and made a passage for the kund to come out by digging the bank of Brahma Kund.

The spot where the axe dropped from his hand came to be known as Parashuram Kund.

The Kalika Puram states that a mere bath in the kund leads to emancipation.

The waters of the kund are considered as sacred as the waters of the River Ganga. I

n the 18th century a sadhu re-established the site of Parashuram Kund.

The sadhu who came through Chowkham, as the story goes, was driven out from his village as he was looked upon as a swindler.

The villagers thereafter were afflicted with some unknown disease. Meanwhile the sadhu, had hidden himself in a cave around the kund away form the angry villagers.

The villagers came in search of him and offered him fruits and flowers and asked forgiveness.

The site of the Parashuram Kund as established by the sadhu was in existence till 1950 when the old site was completely changed by the earthquake that shook the whole of the North-East and the kund was completely covered

Festival falls on Makara Sankarnthi Day.(around  14,January)

    How to Reach.

The kund is 165 kilometres form Tinsukia, the nearest railway station, 97 kilometres via Tezu.

A fleet of the State Transport Department of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh make elaborate arrangements for playing buses form Tinsukia to Namsai, Wakro and Tezu.
