As such every temple has a set of festivals and rituals.

Generally the Birth day of the God,the day when He /She conquered Evil, the important mile stone during God’s Avatar on the earth.

There are also interesting Customs and festivals associated with the Temples.

Every major consecrated Temple has a Temple Cart( Chariot) , the God is taken around in procession around the major streets of the City, there are practices in some temples in the South the daily Accounts are read out to God at the Night!

These Temple Chariot processions are famous in India..

While there are many Chariot Festivals being conducted every year,The Thirvarur and Srivilliputhur  Chariot Festivals are very grand as the Puri Rath Jagannath Rath Yatra( The Journey of Lord Jagannath onthe Chariot, Puri, Orissa)

This Festival is conducted every year,   every-year on Ashad Shukla Dwitiya that generally falls between the months of June-July. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the annual visit of the presiding deities of the Jagannath Puri temple to their Aunt’s house. It is believed that during this festival, Lord Jagannath comes out of their holy abode and gives Darshana (holy view) to the people…

Rath Yatra 2013 date falls on the 10th July (Wednesday) and Return Car Festival or Bahuda Jatra falls on 19th July this year. Also known as Chariot Festival or Car festival, this is one of the most awaited Hindu festivals of the state as well as the country.

The festival is also known as Gundicha Jatra, Ghosa Jatra, Navadina Jatra, Dasavatara Jatra and by a variety of other names. For the devoted and believers, it is considered the most auspicious occasion.

The festival begins with the Ratha Prathistha or invoking ceremony in the morning, but the Ratha Tana or chariot pulling is the most exciting part of the festival, which begins in the late afternoon when the chariots of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhdra start rolling. Each of these carriages have different specifications: The chariot of Lord Jagannath is called Nandighosa, has 18 wheels and is 23 cubits high; the chariot of Balabhadra, called Taladhvaja has 16 wheels and is 22 cubits high; Devadalana, the chariot of Subhadra has 14 wheels and is 21 cubits high’.

The chariots on which the deities are taken to the temple are massive pieces of art that are adorned with numerous designs & patterns. The construction of the chariots starts with the Chandana Yatra and is undertaken by carpenters known as “Maharana”, who hold hereditary rights for the same.

Further, these chariots are distinguished from each other by a set colored pattern of cloth robes such as Lord Jagannath’s chariot (Nandighosa)is covered with red & yellow robes, Lord Baladhabra’s chariot (Taladhwaja) has red & blue robes of cloth and Devi Subhadra’s chariot (Dwarpadalana) is covered with red & black cloth.

  • Caste Is Necessary Unavoidable Introduction.

Speaking or writing on Caste is considered as near sinful by the nouveau Intelligentsia and literati.

    Caste In India
    Caste

Doing either of this attracts the label,

    ‘Casteist

    Religious fanatic,

Anti secular ( Till date I have not understood what this term means, it changes its hues on one’s whims!)

    But facts must be faced.

Before the dawn of Civilization, Man was living in the wilderness, at the mercy of the Elements.

He ate whathe could gather from Nature.

He found Animals living, seeking shelter from the elements in Caves.

He drove the animals out , started living in caves.

In the process he learnt to kill animals and eat them

He developed implements to kill the animals.

He learned that to keep himself safe from the animals and to hunt ferocious animals , he needed the help of fellow Humans.

He liaised with them , started living with them,, not accommodating at first, and then learnt that he had to accommodate.

During the course of this, he copulated, tried various combinations, Polyandry,Polygamy,Lesbianism and Homosexuality before finally arriving at Monogamy.

At first, he formed a Group among the inmates of the Cave in which he was living, then this expanded to a Group of Caves, then a forest are and the Forest.

He felt safe in Numbers, so formed a Community.

    Even now we do.

Those who declare  that they are an Island , are’/can live independently of others usually declare so when they every one around/with them or they have no option to be with any body.

As is in any relationship , there is always a certain amount of give and take.

Man became comfortable when he had to adjust the least and be with people with whom most Common interest.

Based on this some common ground rules, based on certain values like the style of eating; speaking, type of comfortable behaviour and practices, which later became Customs and Mores.

These Customs and Mores became the instruments of Social Control and Social Stability.

Over a period  of time, communities became Tribes, Tribes turned into Societies with Stricter laws of Social Control, based on Common interest.

Even to-day we follow this, though by some other names.

You have Politicians as a flock, Doctors,Lawyers, Judges,Teachers, IT Professionals and the like.

This is based on common grounds.

And a necessity which is determined by the environment and economic parity and common values and habits.

When on a Mission to Space. Earth is our Home and we are all one.

When you come down to earth, you belong to a Continent,Nation,State,District,Town,Street and Your Home , Family

    And finally yourself.

It is in our self-interest we organised ourselves into a Group.

We may not like this, but there is no Altruism is involved here.

Altruism is enlightened self-interest when we do to others what we want them to do unto us,

And conversely we desist from doing to others what we do not like the others to do unto us.

So the Customs.Practices, Mores are stabilized and those with the same values stick together.

This is how the Society and laws governing the Society are formed.

How does Caste come into this?

    Next Post.

  • Yoga State Can Be Attained Faster Yoga Sutra 1.22

    Paramahamsa Yogananda, A Great Yogi
    Paramahamsa Yogananda, A Great Yogi

Some people attain Yoga Siddi very fast.

It takes a long time for the others.

It might take even more than one Lifetime.

The inclination to practice Yoga due to one’s Vaasanas.

The success depends on one’s tireless efforts and following of the Yama and Niyama strictly.

Yet one would find that even those who follow these rules rigorously  do not get results,

On the other hand there are some who seem to attain the State of Yoga relatively easy.

    Why?

Patanjali would be explaining this in the next Sutra on the importance of Iswara Pranidhaana, complete surrender to God,(Iswara)

The fundamental of India philosophy is that one is totally responsible for one’s action,.

You can not shift the responsibility to God, hold Him responsible nor can you expect Him to atone your Sins, as it were, as in some other Religions.

In Indian Philosophy , Free Will Vs Determinism is dealt with exhaustively.

While it is true that , being a Part of Brahman, The Reality, our individual Self , is not affected by our actions,we are responsible for our action at the Empirical level when and if we do not perform an Action as a Non Action,if we are driven by only our senses.

Such actions beget results , the remnants of the Impressions or the Vaasanas linger and they condition our development.

As Krishna declares in the 14th Chapter of The Bhagavad Gita, Sathva Guna is the result of previous Vaasanas or Impressions, though,

‘There may be innumerable Forms and beings , living and non living;yet Prakriti, Nature is The Mother and I am The Father , The Seed”

    (Bhagavad Gita Chapter 14.4)

    Ramana Maharishi and Paramahamsa Yogananda
    Ramana Maharishi and Paramahamsa Yogananda

This Sathva drives a Man for Yoga Sadhana.

As I have been mentioning on various occasions, Yoga is not an exercise that can be mastered in 30 days or following some lectures;it is life long spiritual practice.

It takes in most cases, more than a Life time.

If one were to die before attaining Yoga in that birth, he is born , in the next birth, in a Family of Devotional disposition which helps him to continue his attempts at Yoga, thus rendering the attainment of Yoga faster in the present Birth.

( for who question the theory of Rebirth, I shall be posting an Article on this)

Their fore, the dispositions must  be there, , the continuous practice must be undertaken.

    Then Yoga is achieved faster.

The next is a step less than this.

In some cases, every thing mentioned above might have been followed, yet the Siddhi does not materialize.

The reason is that the Yoga has not been practiced correctly and remnants of Impressions linger.

In such cases , the practitioner attains partial success as the Siddhas.

They have no doubt attained Yoga Siddhi, though of a Lower Order.

This the reason why some Yogis are reborn.

Please read my post” Why some Yogis are reborn?

This level is an average level (Madhyam)

The last is the level we belong to’,

We attempt and do not follow it up regularly.

Here the results will be very slow in forthcoming.

    Yoga Sutra of Patanjali
    Yoga Sutra 1.22

    mridumadhyadhimatratvat tatopi visheshah

    mridu = mild;
    madhya = medium;
    adhimatratvat = by intense;
    totopi = further;
    viseshah = differentiation;

The time necessary for success further depends on whether the practice is mild, medium or intense.

They again differ according as the means are mild, medium or supreme.

Yet, again, it is possible to see a distinction between mild, middling and intense zeal, energy and effort, although yoga (which is spontaneous realization of oneness) and effort (which implies duality) are contradiction in terms.

  • Time For Brahmins To Change At Least in Marriages

    Brahmin Wedding
    Brahmin Wedding

Brahmins have been a closely knit community.

There are other communities which are more closely knit than the Brahmins, say, the Nattukkottai Nagarathar Community.

As I am a Brahmin by birth, a proud one for being so,I deem it fit to record some unpleasant facts, especially  regarding marriages, in our Community.

Some of my observations are likely to hurt but some one has to say them.

I am aware that I will be criticized very severely, for no body is a biter critic of a Brahmin than a fellow Brahmin, much in the same way as the Jews,

    Marriages,

I searched for an alliance for my son for over three and half years before I got him married.

I had utilized all avenues from the traditional circulation of Horoscopes to registering in Matrimonial Sites,

There is a tendency among most of the parents, whose daughter’s are employed, and more so if they have only one daughter:

That of postponing the marriage of their daughters as long as possible.

    The reasons they cite are,,

The girl does not want to marry now,

She needs to be independent for some time, earning well to enable her to stand on her feet,

    The arguments are fallacious.

No Girl or Boy will come to their parents and declare that they want to marry and ask them to look for a suitable spouse.

They would be coy in admitting the fact that it is time for them to get married.

I am excluding those children who come and declare that they are in love with some one(normally with one from another caste: even this I attribute to the fact of parents delaying the marriage on one pretext or another.

As parents it is our responsibility to advise them the advantages of getting married at an early age, the reasons being,

a ) If you are looking for the Best looking woman or Man, remember that the opposite side also does the same and each has the privilege of rejecting.

    b) You do not get any younger and it would be tougher to get a match as time marches on.

And taking  children’s views of not wanting to get married has few serious consequences for parents as well.

I know of a couple of cases, where the parents have stopped looking for alliances because  their children said so.

These parents, they are my close friends, took their children’s views seriously and stopped looking for a match.

Now the boys are past 35.
They have stopped speaking with their parents thought they stay in the same house and are alright in all other respects.

As i can closely mingle with the younger set as a friend, this is with my own children as well, I understood from them that they are cross that their parents have not finalised their marriages!

They are sore that their parents have taken their views seriously!

Now I am looking for alliances for them along with their parents.

Lesson- go about alliances notwithstanding your children’s objections and record them.

If they refuse, show them the records , that would keep them on their toes.

Another repulsive habit of parents of brides insisting that thee Bride groom must be in the city were the girls’ parents live!

The girls might agree to it for the time being , would regret later when they find they remain unmarried for  long.

Children have their lives to led, be it a Boy or Girl.

Another obnoxious habit is that some parents are reluctant to get their daughters married because they will lose their daughter’s salary!

This is a fact and I have , in two instances told the parents of the Girls if they want only money they should not have begotten children!

I may point out a curious fact.

Please check Tamil matrimony marriage site, find out how many girls’ profile have been uploaded by the Girls themselves/their friends as against the profiles uploaded by Parents.

You will find personal/friends uploads will be in the age group of over 27.

The reason is parents keep on refusing Alliances on some spurious ground or another and at the age of 27 or 28 the girl starts taking her life into their hands.

Avoid this and remember delaying the marriage of a Girl is a very serious Sin , Kanya Paapam that would affect your family for generations, not with standing Sumangali Prarthnais.

Another issue is refusing sub sect marriages.

Sub-sects are based on Geographical locations where the ancestors have lived, like Mythili Brahmins hailed from Mithila, Vadamas in Tamil Nadu were from the North of the River Cauvery.

Some times Brahmin sub-sects are derived from the duties they were adept at. Adigas in Cooking, Vaathimaas in Purohitam,Vajpayees,Somayajees in performing a particular. yaga or yagnya

Among Brahmins there is no division of States or Languages either.

We follow the Vedas, period. No differences.

Let me narrate an incident when I visited Sringeri  and had performed Biksha Vandana for His Holiness Sri Bharathi Theertha Swamigal of The Sringeri Mutt.

As me and my wife neared the Acharya, the man who normally stands by his side asked me,

‘neevu kannadadhvara, Are you from Karnataka?’

    I replied,

    ‘I am  Brahmin’

The Acharya heard this and asked  me to explain .

    I said,

‘ I am a Brahmin by birth, not by Knowledge, but still a Brahmin for my ancestors have been good Brahmins .

    My Mother tongue is Tamil,

As a Brahmin my father tongue is Sanskrit.

Therefore, it does not matter for a Brahmin which State he belongs to because He is a Brahmin”

The Acharya called the man and said,

‘Yajnayopaveeda aaki barubavarathra eethara kelu beda,

Do not these questions of those who come here with Yagnyopaveeda”(Sacred Thread)

    That’s it.

Do not look for same sects, State, Language.

    A Brahmin will do.

I observe that people conduct reception before the wedding day.

    This is wrong.

If some one of the pair dies after Reception before marriage, what is the status of either of them?

The habit of clapping of hands after Mangalya Dharana, it is prohibited.

The habit of shaking hands with the couple after Mangalya Dharana  before Aseervatha is a Taboo.

In Hinduism . the ‘Handing Over’ Panigrahana is Sacred and the hands of the couple are not to be touched by others till Aseervatha.

    Some more thoughts might follow.
