  • Festival Of God Sisters Karwah Chauth

It is the unique feature of Hindu Fesivals to have a spiritual meaning,as in Pongal,Baisakhi which celebrates the Compassion of the Sun for providing good yield from the earth.

It also serves a social purpose , that of uniting the family members in all the functions.

In one festival celebrated in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, western Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Gujarat States of India meets the psychological needs a  newly married bride.

In the early days distance was an issue, girls married to a far off place would feel lonelyand feel depressed.

She develops a  close friendship with a woman, of nearly the same age, of the bride and both the girls share their joys and sorrows.

    There is another legend.

Karva is another word for ‘pot’ (a small earthen pot of water) and chauth means ‘fourth’ in Hindi (a reference to the fact that the festival falls on the fourth day of the dark-fortnight, or krishna paksh, of the month of Kartik).[8] It is uncertain how the festival originated and how it came to be celebrated only in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent. One hypothesis is that military campaigns and long-distance travel usually resumed around the time of the festival, as the area dried and numerous rivers of the region (see Sapta Sindhu) subsided from the effects of the monsoon. Women observed the fast to pray for the safety of their husbands at this time as they ventured away from home. The festival coincides with the wheat-sowing time (i.e., the beginning of the Rabi crop cycle). Big earthen pots in which wheat is stored are sometimes called Karvas, so the fast may have begun as a prayer for a good harvest in this predominantly wheat-eating region.

This Festival falls on the Chaturthi, Fourth day of the Waning Moon,Krishna paksha  Nine days before Diwali. It falls on the fourth day of the Kartik month.
The pooja preparations start a day in advance. Married women buy the shringar or the traditional adornments and the other pooja items like the karwa, matthi, heena etc.

Early in the morning they prepare food and have it before sunrise. The morning passes by in other festive activities like decorating hand and feet with heena, decorating the pooja thali and meeting friends and relatives.

In the late afternoon women gather at a common place like temple or a garden or someones’ place who has arranged the pooja. An elderly lady or the pujarin narrates the legend of Karwa Chouth.

The essentials of this gathering and listening of the Karwa chauth story , a special mud pot, that is considered a symbol of lord Ganesha, a metal urn filled with water, flowers, idols of Ambika Gaur Mata, Goddess Parwati and some fruits, mathi and food grains. A part of this is offered to the deities and the storyteller.

Earlier an idol of Gaur Mata was made using earth and cowdung. Now just an idol of Goddess Parwati is kept. Every one lights an earthen lamp in their thalis while listening to the Karwa story. Sindoor, incense sticks and rice are also kept in the thali.

At this time the women wear heavy saris or chunries in red , pink or other bridal colors, and adorn themselves with all other symbols of a married women like, nose pin, tika, bindi, chonp, bangles, earrings etc.

Once the moon rises, the women see its reflection in a thali of water, or through a dupatta or a sieve. They offer water to the moon and seek blessings. They pray for the safety, prosperity and long life of their husbands. This marks the end of the day long fast.

    Other Legends.

A beautiful queen called Veervati was the only sister of seven loving brothers. She spent her first Karva Chauth as a married woman at her parents’ house. She began a strict fast after sunrise but, by evening, was desperately waiting for the moonrise as she suffered severe thirst and hunger. Her seven brothers couldn’t bear to see their sister in such distress and created a mirror in a pipal tree that made it look as though the moon had risen. The sister mistook it for the moon and broke her fast. The moment she ate, word arrived that her husband, the king, was dead. Heartbroken, she wept through the night until her shakti compelled a Goddess to appear and ask why she cried. When the queen explained her distress, the Goddess revealed how she had been tricked by her brothers and instructed her to repeat the Karva Chauth fast with complete devotion. When Veervati repeated the fast, Yama was forced to restore her husband to life.

In a variant of this story, the brothers build a massive fire behind a mountain instead and trick their sister by convincing her that the glow is the moon. She breaks her fast and word arrives that her beloved husband has died. She immediately begins running to her husband’s house, which is somewhat distant, and is intercepted by Shiv[disambiguation needed]-Parvati. Parvati reveals the trickery to her, cuts her own little finger to give the wife a few drops of her holy blood, and instructs her to be careful in keeping the complete fast in the future. The wife sprinkles Parvati’s blood on her dead husband and, coming back to life, they are reunited.

    The Legend of Mahabharata

The belief in this fast and its associated rituals goes back to the pre-Mahabharata times. Draupadi, too, is said to have observed this fast. Once Arjun went to the Nilgiris for penance and the rest of the Pandavas faced many problems in his absence. Draupadi, out of desperation, remembered Lord Krishna and asked for help. Lord Krishna reminded her that on an earlier occasion, when Goddess Parvati had sought Lord Shiva’s guidance under similar circumstances, she had been advised to observe the fast of Karva Chauth. In some tellings of this legend, Shiva tells Parvati the story of Veervati to describe the Karva Chauth fast. Draupadi followed the instructions and observed the fast with all its rituals. Consequently, the Pandavas were able to overcome their problems.[37]

    The Legend of Karva

A woman named Karva was deeply devoted to her husband. Her intense love and dedication towards him gave her shakti (spiritual power). While bathing at a river, her husband was caught by a crocodile. Karva bound the crocodile with a cotton yarn and asked Yama (the god of death) to send the crocodile to hell. Yama refused. Karva threatened to curse Yama and destroy him. Yama, afraid of being cursed by Pati-vrat (devoted) wife, sent the crocodile to hell and blessed Karva’s husband with long life. Karva and her husband enjoyed many years of wedded bliss. To this day, Karva Chauth is celebrated with great faith and belief.

The Story of Satyavan and Savitri

When Lord Yama came to procure Satyavan’s soul, Savitri begged him to grant him life. When he refused, she stopped eating and drinking and followed Yama who carried away her dead husband. Yama said that she could ask for any other boon except for the life of her husband. Savitri asked that she be blessed with children. Yama agreed. Being a “‘Pati-Vrat (devoted) wife, Savitri would never let any other man be the father of her children. Yama was left with no other choice but to restore Savitri’s husband to life

  • Omar, Yousuf Death-Times Now Blinks,Omar Pontificates!

What happens when Arnab Goswami,Times Now Icon, a self appointed crusader, who does not check facts of the story, overtly aggressive bordering on being rude and a smooth operator Omar Abdullah face each other?

Arnob Goswamy of Times Now News Channel
    Arnob Goswamy,Times Now.

Sheer entertainment and battle of words each trying to out bluff each other and coming out with egg on their faces.

This is what happened in the interview between Omar Abdullah and Arnab  Goswamy of Times Now, on7/8 October 2011.

If Arnab could not answer the posers by Abdullah why Salam Reshi’s statement is being taken as the Gospel, especially when he is also in the scam, why Times Now is jumping to conclusions, why the Channel Telecast news item that Omar Abdulla has gone to Delhi to meet his lawyer , which the Channel retracted  later, why the Channel does not trust the Judiciary and why the information on this story has not been checked before telecasting,

Omar Abdullah CM of Jammu and Kashmir.
    Omar Abdullah.

Abullah tried to brazen out the issues on being asked as to why he called a scamster to his Home ,why the IG of Jammu and Kashmir rushed to CM’s residence immediately after Yousuf was in CM’s residence, why cheating/corruption case was not filed against Yousuf in July when the accusations were leveled ,why Yousuf was disheveled when leaving the house when he left Omar’s residence , why Police Personnel present at the time of the incidence were transferred immediately  and whether the Police would  have acted the same way if this incident were to happen in any body;else’s home other than the Chief Minister.

The conclusion is , yes, there seems to be corruption involved and Yousuf was beaten to Death and a smooth operator like Omar Abdullah seems to have fixed things up.

How Congress would wish they had Omar Abdullah in their party to defend 2 G scam!

The Channel Times Now, especially Arnob Goswamy looked meek ,speech less and defenseless to Omar’s queries.

It goes to prove that you never air a Story without doing research and verifying facts, that too with an abrasive and egotistical Anchor.

This issue will fizzle out into appointing a CBI Inquiry and that’s That.

Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Friday conceded that he was aware of corruption allegations against his party worker, whose death has kicked up a furore triggering demands for his resignation, but the information slipped out of his mind.

Omar said allegations against Syed Mohammed Yousuf were brought to his notice about two months ago but it slipped out of his mind to act on those allegations. “I am only human (and) with the entire pressure of handing a peaceful summer, the Amarnath Yatra, governance and a whole host of other things, it just slipped my mind,” he told a TV channel.

Yousuf died in a police hospital a day after Omar summoned him to his house to sort out the issue of corruption involving postings. The opposition People’s Democratic Party has accused the CM of manhandling Yousuf before his death. Another NC worker Abdul Salam Reshi’s allegation, that Yousuf was taking money on behalf of Omar’s father, Farooq Abdullah, for legislative council and ministerial berths, has further embarrassed the Abdullahs. Reshi, who was also summoned by Omar, told media that Yousuf’s condition worsened after he left the CM’s house and that he vomited blood before his death.

Every party has men like this who will sell political proximity for favours,” Abdullah told a TV channel. Yousuf Shah was summoned by Abdullah to his home on September 30 to seek an explanation from him on the charge that he had taken bribes from party workers.

After talking to Yousuf, as well as the alleged bribe givers, Abdullah handed over him to the Crime Branch. His death, barely 12 hours after he was sent to police custody has set off troubles for the chief minister.

  • Shall we hoist Indian Flag in Pakistan,PM?

I shall hoist in my site.Any problems?

We should not hoist the Indian Flag in,

    Story:

With BJP planning to hoist national flag in Srinagar on the Republic Day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said parties should desist from scoring “political points” or “promoting divisive agendas” and peace should not be disturbed in the “sensitive” Jammu and Kashmir.

Observing that the Republic Day is “a solemn occasion”, he said, “It is not an occasion to score political points, to embarrass state and local administrations, to create situations that could lead to entirely avoidable problems, or to promote divisive agendas.”

“It is my hope that all our citizens and political parties will heed this call and will do nothing that will disturb peace and harmony, or detract in any way from the dignity of Republic Day,” Singh said in a statement.

He said it was “all the more important to observe maximum restraint particularly in a sensitive state like Jammu and Kashmir.”

Though he did not name anybody, he was apparently referring to BJP’s Ekta Yatra which is planned to proceed to Srinagar to hoist the national tricolor at the historic Lal Chowk, because of which the government is apprehending trouble.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has made it clear that it will not allow hoisting of the national flag by BJP on that day but the party is adamant on going ahead with the plan.

Singh observed that over the years, the states have devised their own time-tested and publicly-accepted procedures for the Republic Day celebrations within a common national framework.

Here’s the situation. This republic day, the nationalist party BJP wants to hoist the Indian national flag in Lal Chowk, a troubled area in Kashmir. The spot has frequently been witness to struggles between Indian forces, Kashmiri separatist forces, and Pakistan-aided militants. The J&K government calls this attempt by the BJP a provocation to violence. The BJP and its supporters say it is a shame to say that hoisting the Indian national flag on Indian ground is a cause for trouble. The central government, curiously, has remained silent on the matter.

  • China flexes muscle,India watches.

Both China and India have their own perspectives and visions about their countries.China wants to strengthes its geopolitical presence in Asia by bridging ties with Pakistan, Myanmar,South Korea,Hongkong, Malaysia,Singapore,Indonesia etc, t0  register its presence to ward off US influence.

As China perceives India, rightly so,as US’s ally it is taking care to keep India out of balance by keeping it engaged with Pakistan,by openly supporting Pakistan as well as Myanmar;Srilanka ,playing the Tamil card(Tamils constitute a State in India).

It is also increasing its infrastructural projects in Pakistan occupied Kashmir,Myanmar,Sri Lanka and surface transport in Tibet as well

It is not a comforting thought to have India as a Security Council permanent member, as it perceives India to be closer to US,UK,France and Russia.

India, on the other hand, has to tackle Pakistan , Sri Lanka Myanmar,Nepal and Bangladesh in the immediate vicinity, apart from improving relations with Indonesia, Malaysia and the countries in Asia , including Japan and S.Korea.

Hence their visions do not match.

I sense the status quo shall continue and it may not escalate into a skirmish-basically posturing and sparring.

The exception to the cheery mood was the mid-December visit of Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of China. Mr. Wen did secure business deals, announce new trade goals and offer reassurances of friendly Chinese intentions. But the trip also underscored that many points of tension between the Asian giants — trade imbalances, their disputed border and the status of Kashmir — are growing worse. And the Indian foreign policy establishment, once reluctant to challenge China, is taking a harder line.

“The Wen visit has widened the gap publicly between India and China,” said Ranjit Gupta, a retired Indian diplomat and one of many vocal analysts pushing a more hawkish line toward China. “And it represents for the first time a greater realism in the Indian establishment’s approach to China.”

India aspires to membership on the United Nations Security Council, and China is now the only permanent member nation that has not explicitly endorsed such a move. But what has rattled Indian leaders even more is their contention that China is being deliberately provocative in Kashmir as it grows closer to Pakistan, China’s longtime ally and India’s nemesis. China has also been expanding its diplomatic and economic influence around South Asia, stepping up its involvement in the affairs of Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Maldives.

Mr. Wen’s visit was supposed to help address those tensions at a time when India is starting to draw closer to the United States. Among Chinese leaders, Mr. Wen is perceived as a friend of India, and his 2005 visit was regarded as a breakthrough after he and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh agreed on a broad framework to address the border dispute.

    ……

Meanwhile, China infuriated India by starting to issue special stapled paper visas — rather than the standard visa — for anyone in Indian-controlled Kashmir traveling to China on the grounds that Kashmir is a disputed territory. China later objected to including a top Indian general responsible for Kashmir in a military exchange in China. In response, Indian officials angrily suspended all military exchanges between the countries. Indian officials had thought Mr. Wen might reverse the stapled visas policy on his trip, but he instead only called for more diplomatic consultations.

Indian commentators have noticed that articles in the Chinese state-run media have renewed Chinese claims that the disputed border between the nations is roughly 1,240 miles in length — even as India puts the length at about 2,175 miles. The difference roughly represents the border between Indian-controlled Kashmir and Tibetan China. By omitting this section, the Chinese are questioning the status of Indian-controlled Kashmir, a position that buttresses Pakistan’s own claims, several Indian analysts have argued.

The most visible evidence that these problems were deepening came in the joint communiqué issued by the two nations at the end of Mr. Wen’s visit. China typically demands that nations voice support for the one-China policy, which holds that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. In past communiqués, India has agreed to such language, but this time it was omitted, a clear sign of Indian irritation.

People like Arundati Roy believe that they are the intelligentsia of the country.

A non-Indophile, she thinks she knows every thing and deludes herself in imaginary causes to get the lime light.

You do not take yourself seriously after having written glorified pulp fiction, which, unfortunately has been praised out of proportion, just as we praise the child for its efforts.

The child turns out to be Frankenstein Monster.

Does she know about the freedom struggle?

Does she  how Kashmir was formed as also Pakistan and India?

    What about Kashmiri Pandits?

    India has no Freedom.

    Well Pakistan Has.

    Story:

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah referring to self-proclaimed human rights activist Arundhati Roy‘s anti-India statement, said on Tuesday (October 26) that, ‘in India we have so much freedom that the ones who harm the country are also Indians’.

The Union Minister also said, “They are misusing the freedom and there’s no limit. Our country has given that freedom of speech, it is for them to use that freedom”.

Arundhati Roy in her speech on October 24 at the anti-India meet in Srinagar said, “Kashmir has never been an integral part of India. It is a historical fact. Even the Indian Government has accepted this. By describing the pro-freedom leaders in the Valley as separatists, India in a sense has already acknowledged that secession has taken place”.

She further claimed, “India fought in Nagaland, Manipur, Punjab and Kashmir. It projects itself as the biggest democracy in the world and emerging economic power but at the same time it oppresses its states and the people of diverse cultures”.

Arundhati Roy’s this statement created controversy after which Centre and Jammu and Kashmir government took notice and have now started scrunitising her speech.
