  • Name Rama Gave Rama Sethu

The Rama Sethu , Adams Bridge in India was called  by the Lankans as ‘Aadhaam Bridge’ because their first Islamic leader traveled over this bridge by foot from India and thus this bridge has a holy connotation for them.

But westerners saw the affinity of the Name to Adam and renamed it as Adams Bridge.

But the name given by Rama to this Bridge is Nala Bridge.

Nala was a vanara of Sugreeva’s army and he was the one who designed it.

(I recall Kaunanidhi asking whether Rama was an Engineer, where he took His degree and was He an Engineer?

    Yellow Shawl !

    This is the answer.)

“The Ramayana narrates that Sita – the wife of Rama, prince of Ayodhya and avatar of the god Vishnu- was kidnapped by Ravana, the rakshasa (demon) king of Lanka. Rama aided by an army of vanaras (monkeys) reached the end of land and wanted to cross over to Lanka. Rama worships the god of the ocean, Varuna and requests him to make way. When Varuna does not appear before Rama, Rama starts shooting various weapons at the sea, which starts drying up. A terrified Varuna pleads to Rama. Though he refuses to give way, he gives Rama a solution. He tells Rama that Nala, the son of Vishwakarma – the architect of the gods, is amongst his vanara army; Nala has the necessary expertise of an architect, owing to a boon from his divine father. Varuna suggests that Rama construct a bridge across the ocean to Lanka, under the supervision of Nala. Nala volunteers for the task and also comments that the arrogance of the Ocean (Varuna) was tamed by Rama with a threat when love had failed. The vanaras fell mighty trees, and collect logs of wood and giant boulders and cast them in the sea. With the help of the vanara army, Nala completes the 80 miles (130 km) (tenyojana) bridge in just five days. Rama and his army pass over it and reach Lanka, where they prepare to fight Ravana..

Commentaries on the Ramayana elaborate the event. Nala is said to have been born when Vishwakarma embraced Nala’s vanara mother and has an ejaculation. While some commentaries say that other monkeys merely collect the building material, Nala is the one who constructs the bridge; others says that the monkeys build the bridge under his directions. The Kamba Ramayana also solely credits Nala as the architect and builder of the bridge, the Ramacharitamanasa credits Nala and his brother Nila for the creation.

In some versions, Nala is said to have the power to make stones float and, thus, easily makes the sea-bridge.[3] In other versions, another vanara called Nila is also said to have this power and both Nala and Nila are described as builders of the bridge. The tale justifying this power states that in their youth, these monkeys were very mischievous and used to throw the murtis (holy images) worshipped by the sages in the water. As a remedy, the sages decreed that any stone thrown by them in water will not drown, thus saving the murtis. Another tale narrates as assured by Varuna, the stones dropped by Nala and Nila float, but they drift in the sea and do not form a continuous structure, Hanuman, Rama’s devotee and monkey lieutenant suggests that the name of Rama be written, so they stick together; the remedy worked.

  • Rama With Inscribed Arrow Thillaivilagam

Lord Rama with an arrow containing the inscription .Rama Saram’ is one of its kind.

The arrow containing this seems to indicate His approach to Life.

    ‘One word,One Arrow, One wife’

Lord Rama is known for his adherence to His promises, despite them proving uncomfortable to Him,like killing of Vaali, accepting Vibheeshana, asking Sita to undergo the ordeal by Fire.

He was an archer par excellence, whose arrows never missed their marks.

    Kothandarama.jpg
    Kothandarama,Thillaivilagam. Click to enlarge.

I is interesting to note that Rama used His special arrow, Rama Baana only thrice.

One to hit Kakasura, who was troubling Sita, another to kill Vaali and yet another to kill Ravana.

The temple at Thillaivilakam, near Thiruthuraipoondi, Tamil Nadu has a Rama Idol of at least 1000 years old,has an arrow in Hand that has the words ‘Rama Saram’, Rama’s Arrow.

Moolavar : Veera Kothandarama East Facing Standing Posture along with Sita, Lakshmana and Dasa Anjaneya.

The 5feet Moolavar Rama is seen in a majestic posture sporting a handsome smile. To his right is Sita seen in a Kalyana Kolam.

Kothandarama is seen providing a ‘Tribangi’ Seva here at this temple. The neck has one kind of a curve, the hip a different curve and the leg in a bent posture.

The Moolavar idol of Kothandarama is believed to be at least a 1000years old. Rama is holding the bow in his left hand. On a close look at his hands, one is able to see the nerves, the ring and his sharp nails. One is also able to see the sharp distinctive fingers on each hand just like a human hand.

    5different Rama temples

The majestic posture of Veera Kothandarama at Thillai Vilagam is similar in facial posture to the ones at Mudikondan (Baalya Rama), Sri Vanjiyam (Hathambavur Rama), Madurantakam ( Eri Kaatha Rama) and Punnai Nallur (Saligrama Rama)

Anjaneya is seen next to Sita (who is seen in a Kalyana Kolam) in a Dasa Posture with his right hand close to his mouth in a posture of whispering something to Lord Rama. The story goes that Anjaneya was reminding Lord Rama of the promise to Baratha to return to Ayodhya at the stipulated time. Hearing this, Sita asked Anjaneya to carry curd rice to Bharatha with the message that they were on their way. On finding Baratha in a state of disbelief, Anjaneya lifted him on his shoulder and carried him to this region. It is at Mudi -Kandan (now Mudikondan) that Baratha found Rama’s hair and instantly recognised that his Lord was genuinely on his way back. It was at Mudikondan that Rama hugged his brother Bharatha in a happy gesture of meeting him again after many years.

Belief is that presenting curd rice to Anjaneya at this temple would liberate the devotee from problem associated with marriage and navagriha dosham. The curd rice is packed on Anjaneya’s body and is not distributed to the devotees.

    Festivals.

Aadi Amavasai and Thai Amavasai days are sacred at this temple. Couples who bathe in the tank west of the temple on either of these two days are believed to be blessed with children.

11day Rama Navami utsavam in Panguni- with Vahana procession on each of the days

On the 4th day is the Garuda Sevai.

On the 10th day of the utsavam, Rama Pattabhibhisekam is performed with the Lord seen with a special crown.

On the 11th day is the Vidayatri festival where Rama goes on a procession on ‘Deer Vahana’ the only one of its kind.

  • Music Producing Hanuman Sapthaswara Anjaneya

Many Hindu Temples have Stone Pillars that produce sound, the Seven Notes, Sa, Ri,Ga, Ma, Pha,Dha, and Ni.

For example we have this pillar in Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple,Suseendram Sthanumalaya temple.

What makes the Vanmutti Sinivasa Temple near Mayiladuthurai is that the Idol of Hanuman produces these sounds.

    Hanuman, Kozhikuthi,jpg
    Hanuman Kozhikothi

To my knowledge this is the only Temple Idol that produces these sounds.

There is a separate shrine for Lord Anjaneya [Hanuman] in the temple. Normally a devotee will find the shrine closed on three sides and the facing side only open. But in this kshetra one can see the back portion of the Lord also. Lord Hanuman’s tail is seen raised till His head and there is a small bell in end of the tail.

The Lord is seen standing is a ‘ullasa bhava’ with His left leg slightly folded in a easy way and His right leg is seen secured to the ground. Thandai adorns the lotus feet of the Lord. Wearing a katcham, over which a uthriyam is tightly fastened over which there is a weast ornament. The two palms are held together in a ‘pranam’ posture. His adorns ‘kankanam’ in wrists, ‘keyuram’ in the upper arm, and bhujavalaya on shoulders. Lord is seen wearing ‘yagyopaveetham’ and His neck is adorned with five different types of mala. He is seen wearing ‘kundala’ in His ears which is crowned with ‘karna puspha’ and His kesa is neatly tied with a ornamental ‘kesa bandha’. Lords ‘pingaksha’ is bright large and glowing bestowing benovalance to the devotee.

    Sapthaswara Sri Anjaneya

The Lord Sri Anjaneya of this kshetra is known as ‘Sapthaswara Sri Anjaneya’. While it is known in archeology that many temples in Bharath have pillers which can produce musical tones. In all these cases there will be different pillers to produce each note. But as a peculiar case this Lord Anjaneya produces all the seven notes of ‘sa ri ga ma pa tha ni ‘when tapped at different places of the deity. This is a unique feature of this deity and probably only one in Bharat.”

    Lord Srinivasa.

But there is another deity of Sri Vishnu in Athi wood in a place called Kozikuthi near Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu. This deity is known by the name Sri Srinivasa Perumal. In Tamil He is known as Sri Vanamutti Perumal. This presiding deity gives dharshan to the devotees all through the year. He is the only deity in the world who is carved out of a single Athi tree and is twenty feet tall.

  • ‘I Have To Go’ Vellala Hanuman, Sanjeevaraya Temple.

While Hanuman was returning to Sri lanka after getting the Sanjeevi Herb with the Sanjeevi Parvatah(Mountain), he came down in a place on the banks of the river Kumudhini/Kumudhavathi, near Prodtattur in Andhra Pradesh to perform Saym Sanhya Vandana(evening sun worship).

After completing the ritual when he attempted to leave the place the Rishis(Sages) near the river asked Him to stay back.

    Velllala Anjaneya.gif.
    Vellala Hanuman

Hanuman replied that He was on Lord Rama’s mission and had to go and promised to return.

‘Vellala’ I have to go in Telugu and leaped into the air to continue His journey.

    He promised to come back.

Sanjeevaraya temple is in Vellala a village in Rajupalalem Madel, Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh.

    How to reach.

    Airport.Hyderabad.,Vijayawada.

    Railway Station.Kurnool.

Bus Station.Kurnool, Prodattur.Buses ae available to Kurnool from Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vijayawada.

Proddatur is the nearest famous place to this village and is nearly twenty three kilo meters. One can reach this village from Chagalamarri [in Kadapa – Kurnool route] and is eight kilometers from Chagalamarri.

    How the Temple was built.

During the fifteenth century this place was under the rule of governors of Vijayanagar known as Nayakas. During this time one Sri Hanumath Mallu an army chieftain came to this place for hunting. He fell sick while on sujorn and was compelled to stay at the village Vellala. While on camp at this place one day he was given a divine direction that he should bring to bank the statue of Sri Hanuman from inside the Kumudavathi River.

Chieftain sent his men in search of the statue in the waters of Kumudavathi River, although he was sick he supervised the operation. After a long search they could locate the statue of Sri Hanuman in the River. He had then arranged installation of the statue among the chanting of manthras and as per the prescribed rules ‘prana pradeshta’ of the staute was conducted. From then on Sri Hanuman of this kshetra bestowed all the blessings to His devotees.

Only if one stands nearer to entrance of the Garbhagraham one can see the main deity Sri Sanjeevaraya in full.
