  • Hanuman Uproots Shiva Linga Hanuman Pit Thirukkurankaval

Anjaneya, Hanuman is considered to be an Avatar of Shiva and some Purans mention Him as the Son of Lord Shiva.

Though Hanuman was an ardent Devotee of Lord Rama, He was a devotee of Shiva as well.

But there is an incident narrated in the Valmiki Ramayana, where Hanuman uprooted the Shiva Linga!

    Hanuman Worships Shiva.

Lord Rama, after the killing of Ravana, was advised to perform Prayaschitta, Atonement, for killing Ravana a Vedic scholar and a devotee of Shiva in Rameswaram, within two days from the date of killing Ravana.

Rama accordingly reached Rameswaram, while Hanuman and Jatayu were sent to search for A Shiva Linga

As they were delayed, Sita, asked by Rama , to. form a Shiva Linga out of sand , as the suspicious Muhurtha was about to end..

Sita did and at the same time Hanuman with the Linga was sighted.

Hanuman was upset that the Linga was not used by Sita .

Rama asked him to remove the Linga by the Sita so that Hanuman’s Linga could be installed,

Hanuman tried to uproot it, but finding the job tough, coiled His Tail around the Linga and uprooted it.

This fell few miles off Rameswaram and it is called Hanuman Pallam, Hanuman Pit.

In the process Hanuman’s tail was cut off.

Hanuman realized his folly and Rama advised him to perform Pooja for Shiva at Thirukkurankaval .

    Hanuman did so..

Lord Hanuman realized his folly. It was pre-ordained that the lingam prepared by Lord Sita was to be used for the rituals and sought forgiveness from Lord Rama and Sita to regrow his tail.

Lord Rama suggested to Lord Hanuman that he seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva instead and suggested that Lord Hanuman visit Thirukurungaval and worship Lord Shiva there to get back his tail. Hence the place has acquired its name, Tirukurunkaval (Place where Lord Shiva was worshipped by a monkey-faced God) The testimony to this story is that it is one of the few Lord Shiva temples in the world, with a shrine to Lord Hanuman facing Lord Shiva.

It is also a metaphorical message that Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu (of which Lord Rama was an incarnation) are the same.

Thirukkurankukka/ Thirukkurankaval is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva in Myladuthurai, Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the 5 prominent temples of Lord Shiva ending its name with ‘Ka’ and they are: Thiruvanaikka, Thirukkodikka, Thirunellikka, Thirkolakka and Thirukkurankukka.

  • Rama Not Worshiped In Krishna Mahabharata Times?

I came across a discussion in the web whether Lord Rama was worshiped during the period of Mahabharata and Lord Krishna.

With my limited knowledge of the Epics,Ramayana and Mahabharata, I verified facts.

    Vishnu ViswaroopamVisnu's Cosmic Form.
    Viswaroopa Of Vishnu.

There is no mention of anyone , let alone Krishna, worshiping Lord Rama during the Mahabharata period.

    Reasons are quite a few.

1.In Indian Philosophy, Individual worship, or collective worship is not encouraged.

Nor the idol worship is allowed /mentioned in the Vedas.

However one finds the worship of Gods by performing penance was undertaken.

In the Puranas and the Epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata, The Trimurti, Brahma, Vishnu,  Shiva and Devi were worshiped in the form of penance, mainly to get material benefit, Power or Knowledge.

Indra was also worshiped in the same way.

However the practice of worshiping a Living One or a Deified One like Rama was not in practice.

In the case of Rama, many Rishis, many commoners, and even Rakshasas including Ravana knew Rama as an Avatar.

But the fervent worship in our present style we have now was not there.

Intense personal devotion to Rama by Hanuman,Sabari and a few others was in vogue.

In the same way,Rama was not worshiped during the Mahabharata period.

2.As Indian philosophy is  of the view that personal enlightenment is by  one’s efforts and action with God as a facilitator, not by God as the sole provider of Salvation,(Gnana , Karma and Raja Yoga)

(Visishtadvains , some others and those who follow Bhakthi Marga would differ with me here), worshiping for Salvation was

in theform of penance, supplemented by effort in following Dharma as prescribed in the Vedas.

I am also aware that if one has to perform good actions and be pious , God’s Benevolence is needed.

One needs the Blessings of the Lord to even think of Him.

At the same time, Indian Philosophy is equally forceful in saying that one can attain Moksha by one’s efforts alone.

This divergence of views is the speciality of Hinduism.

These points can not be argued upon as they do not fall within the purview of Logic but Experience and Intuition.

    3. Yet there is no doubt  that Lord Rama was venerated during the Mahabharata times.

Lord Krishna Himself appeared in the form of Rama to Jambhavantha before marrying his daughter Jambavathi.

And we had Hanuman revealing Himself to Bhima and extolling Rama, when Bhima tried to pick up a quarrel with Hanuman.

4.Lord Rama had shown his Viswaroopa to Bharghav Rama.

Ramayana is narrated thrice in Mahabharata by Lomasa, Markandeya and Hanuman .

    .Rama’s Viswaroopa.

‘”Lomasa continued, ‘Hearing this, Dasaratha’s son blazed up in wrath and said, ‘I have heard what thou hast said, and even pardoned thee. O son of Bhrigu’s race, thou art full of vanity. Through the Grandsire’s grace thou hast obtained energy that is superior to that of the Kshatriyas. And it is for this that thou insultest me. Behold me now in my native form: I give thee sight.’ Then Rama of Bhrigu’s race beheld in the body of Dasaratha’s son the Adityas with the Vasus, the Rudras, the Sadhyas with the Marutas, the Pitris, Hutasana, the stellar constellations and the planets, the Gandharvas, the Rakshasas, the Yakshas, the Rivers, the tirthas, those eternal Rishis identified with Brahma and called the Valkhilyas, the celestial Rishis, the Seas and Mountains, the Vedas with the Upanishads and Vashats and the sacrifices, the Samans in their living form, the Science of weapons, O Bharata, and the Clouds with rain and lightning, O Yudhishthira! And the illustrious Vishnu then shot that shaft. And at this the earth was filled with sounds of thunder, and burning meteors. O Bharata, began to flash through the welkin. And showers of dust and rain fell upon the surface of the earth. And whirlwinds and frightful sounds convulsed everything, and the earth herself began to quake. And shot by the hand of Rama, that shalt, confounding by its energy the other Rama, came back blazing into Rama’s hands. And Bhargava, who had thus been deprived of his senses, regaining consciousness and life, bowed unto Rama–that manifestation of Vishnu’s power. And commanded by Vishnu, he proceeded to the mountains of Mahendra.( Mahabharata , Vana Parva,Tirtha Yatra Parva , Section XCIX)

  • Gnana Mudra Rama Without Bow Arrrow Nedungunam

It is very rare to find Lord Rama with out His Bow and Arrow.

And Lord Rama with Gnana Mudra?

As far as I know, Vishnu or His avatars do not exhibit Gnana Mudra.

Lord Shiva, that too in the form of Dakshina Murthy, one who faces South or one who is in the South exhibits Mudra,

Vishnu’s Reclining form is Yoga Nidra.

But there is a rare Temple of Lord Sri Ram , Nedungunam, near Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, where Lord Rama appears without His Bow and Arrow.

And He is with Gnana Mudra.

    Yoga Rama,Nedungunam.jpg Yoga Rama,Nedungunam.

    Chin Mudra.

The thumb and forefinger on each of the hands are jointed, forming a zero. The rest of the fingers are extended. The hands are placed palms-up on the thighs or knees while sitting in vajrasana. This mudrā activates the diaphragm, making for deep “stomach-breathing” as the diaphragm pushes out the internal organs when it descends towards the pelvis on inhalation. Slow rhythmic breathing in a 5-2-4-2 rhythm (5 being the exhalation, and 4 is the inhalation) makes prana flow in the pelvis and in the legs.

Located 24kms South of Vandavasi on the Kanchipuram – Chetput-Thiruvannamalai route at the foot of the Dheergajala Mountain is the over 500years old Yoga Rama temple in Nedungunam where Lord Rama is seen in a unique sitting ‘Chin Mudra’ posture without his bow listening to Hanuman’s Vedic recital.

    Legend.

Answering the prayers of Rishi Shugar, Rama provided darshan to him and stayed here for a day on his way back to Ayodhya after defeating the Lanka King Ravana.

The temple which was built by various kings 700 years ago is a living legend of several periodical specialties and uniqueness. The temple houses several huge mandapams to facilitate the formation of yaga salas. The uniqueness of this schetra is that the ‘Moolavar’ Sree Rama’s divine posture, cannot be seen at other places. Here Sri Rama sits as ‘Yoga Ramar’ without bow and arrow and with the right hand positioned close to his heart in a ‘Gnana Muthirai’. This is further complimented with lord Seetha in sitting position holding a lotus flower and Lakshmana standing with bow and arrow followed by ‘Sri Anjaneya’ sitting in front of Sri Rama in reading posture referring to ‘Brahma Sutra’ inscribed on palm leaves.

Sri Rama and Sri Seetha are sitting on a peetam inscribed with lionheads. According to history the moolasthana moorthis are Rishiprathista. As per sthala purana Sri Rama has visited Suga Bramarishis ashram and blessed him while returning from SriLanka after Thewar and stayed here for a day.

  • Where Hanuman Threw Saneeswara Rare Shani Idol

Where Hanuman Threw Saneeswara Rare Shani Idol

Ravana was so mighty he could dictate terms to all, including the Devas and even the Navagrahas, the Nine Planets.

Saneeswar Mandir, Gwalior.Image.jpg Shri Shani(Saturn) Mandir Shanishchara,Shani Parvat, Village Ainti , District Morena ,Near Gwalior Madhya Pradesh

When his wife Mandodaru, was pregnant with Indrajit,Ravana wanted  all the planets to be in a benevolent position,  at the time of Indrajit’s Birth

He ordered all the Nine planets  to be in the places assigned by him, that is the Eleventh Houses.

But Shani refused but to humour Ravana sat on the Eleventh House but stretched his to the 12th House, with disastrous consequences for Indrajit.

Had Saneeswara remained in the eleventh house, along with the other planets,Indrajit would have remained immortal.

    That was not to be.

    Ravana imprisoned Saneeswara.

    Saneeswara responded by saying,

    Scroll down for Video.

“O King of Lankaa, You may keep me as a prisoner, but only I will destroy your whole family, and I will do in a such a way that nobody will remain in your family to remember you. O Raavan, You have got the Vardaan of immortality from Brahmaa Jee, you are misusing it by using your might. But listen to me, nobody can stay before me whether Devtaa, human being or Asur. I can burn them even just by looking at them. But, no, I won’t burn you, because by burning you I do not want to insult Prabhu. That is why I accept your imprisonment, because presently you are enjoying the fruits of your Tap.

But listen, In the end of Tretaa Yug, one Raam Bhakt (devotee) will enter your Lankaa in spite of your strict vigilance, and Hey Raavan, just in moments he will burn your Lankaa. Normally after burning the gold should be pure but by looking at it I will make it black. By doing this I will show you my power to you for the first time.” But Raavan was very proud, so he did not pay much attention to his words and tied him.”

Shani got tied, but he sat on Raavan’s head in a subtle form and destroyed his wisdom. As a result he brought his death Seetaa to his city Lankaa. When Hanumaan came to Lankaa searching for Seetaa Jee and he burned it, he saw Shani Dev. He asked him – “Who are you and why are tied up here? What is your power?”

Shani replied – “Hey Pavan Putra, I am Shani. Because of his Tap, Raavan has tied me here. Please cut my bondage.” Hanumaan cut his bondage and said to Shani – “I burned this Lankaa, but this Lankaa has shone more than before, therefore you destroy it by your one gaze.” Shani said – “Take me to a high place.” So Hanumaan took him on a peak of a mountain and as soon as Shani cast a look on Lankaa, Lankaa got burnt to ashes. Raavan continued to look at his Lankaa, but in spite of being immortal he could not do anything. Such is the effect of Shani’s gaze. All Graha of Meghnaad were in auspicious House, but Shani alone sitting in 12th House, not only killed Meghnaad but destroyed the whole Lankaa also.

Hanumaan said to Shani – “It is not appropriate for you to stay here now, I am throwing you into Bhaarat with my power. Wherever you will fall, you will be worshipped there, you will free people from affliction and and besow them material comforts.” Hearing this Shani got very happy. He said to him – “Hey Hanumaan, My day is Saturday. I am giving this day to you. Who will worship you with devotion this day, offer you Naivedya, feed banana, jaggery, Chanaa, sweet Kheel (puffed Dhaan), I will not afflict those people.” Hearing this Hanumaan also gotvery happy.

There is a mountain near Gwalior, at a distance of 30 Kms, its name is Shanishcharaa. Shani fell on that mountain. There is Shani’s idol where special fair is celebrated on Shani Amaavasyaa day (any Amaavasyaa fallen on Saturday).

    Location.

Shani Parvat, Village Ainti , District Morena ,Near Gwalior Madhya Pradesh.

Shanichara railway station is located at Gwalior Bhind Railway Line. From any part of India you have to reach Gwalior and from there you can easily access Shanischara (Shanichara).

For air travellers nearest airport is Gwalior Airport.Shanischara is just 15kms away from Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Terminal i.e. Gwalior Airport.

From Gwalior city you can hire an autorikshaw or a car to reach shanischara at nominal cost.

A Grand Prayer Organised On Every Saturday
A grand puja (prayer) is held here every Amavasya Shanivar (moonless Saturday night), which has devotees
thronging to the temple in droves. Special narrow gauge trains operate from Gwalior, Agra, Jaipur, Baroda and
some other cities to bring devotees to the temple.
    The Statue of Hanuman
Just outside this stone temple is a statue of the monkey-god Hanuman. It depicts Hanuman with a dagger tied to
his waist stepping on another monkey. A very curious practice is observed here: worshippers leave behind their
shirts and shoes or have their hair cut in the belief that any curse that might have been cast on them will disappear
    along with their locks.
    Facilities
    Transport
The Shanichara Temple is about 37 kilo meters from Morena en route to Banmore (NH3) Aiti Village.

  • Protection From Danger Apad Udharaka Hanumath Stotram Vibishana

Protection From Danger Apad Udharaka Hanumath Stotram Vibishana

Life is balance between Risks and Our Faith.

Sanatana Dharma has three classifications of the Happenings of the world and the individual.

    Adi Bautikam.

    Adyathmikam, and

    Adi Daivikam.

Adi Bautikam relates to the events happening because the Five Elements of Nature, Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether.

One has no real protection from these when they unleash themselves

Ask any one who has watched the film Gravity.

If he/ she does not admit to being scared to the level of Panic looking at the vast expanse of Space and for a moment not imagined themselves in the predicament of being lost in Space.

Efforts and our achievements the  in Science vanish in front of them.

Recall The Tsunami that struck South India in the recent past

Adyatmikam related the reaction for actions we have performed, one can not escape the recoil.

Adi Daivikam is at the Pleasure of God, in commensurate with our actions.

Despite knowing that we are powerless and puny, we arrogate ourselves with Knowledge and Powere.

Even such men at times of crisis, turn to God.

I read in a Thriller by Fredrick Forsyth, The Icon, a seemingly atheist general says,

Show me one man who does not believe in the Power of something beyond him, when one sees Cannon Shells blowing up within inches of him, him remaining unhurt, while those near him were killed.

The only recourse is to seek the help of God at times of Crisis.

Hanuman is the Master of encountering Crises.

He would ensure that you remain free of fear.

On a daily basis one may recite,

Buddhir Balam Yaso Dhairyam Nirbhayathvama Arogatha,

    Ajaatyam Vaakpatuthvancham,

    Hanumath Smaranaath Bahaveteth.

This will release you from fears of any kind.

There is yet another stotra by Vibishana, for overcoming Danger.

    It is

    Apad Udharaka Hanumath Stotram
