  • Why No Woman Pope?

There has been no woman Pope  in the History of The Catholic Church.

Christianity is touted to be a religion which treats every one equally, it is its USP.

    But no woman?

    Pope Joan.
    Pope Joan.

There is also the controversy that Jesus Christ had left Christianity in the hands of Mary Magdalene.

Why are women not allowed and what is so unique in Men ?

In Hinduism, right from the Vedic Ages, there have been  many Rishis, like Gargi to Modern ‘Amma(Ma Anandmayi)’

” There has never been a female pope. There is a myth about a Pope Joan that in recent times has been revived, but which has been clearly rebutted by scholars.

Wikipedia has a good outline of the Pope Joan myth here:

    – Roman Catholic Answer

The Pope is the Bishop of Rome, if he is not a Bishop when elected to the Papacy, he is tonsured, ordained a lector, then an acolyte, then a deacon, then a priest, and finally consecrated a bishop. Up until the ninth century, bishops were never elected popes as bishops never moved out of their diocese. Regardless, he is always a bishop, and only a man can be consecrated a bishop, so, no, there has never been a female pope.

    – In the legend she was supposed to have been very talented, and, disguised as a man, to have risen through the church hierarchy to become pope, sometime in the Middle Ages.
It has been a popular story since the thirteenth century, but no one has ever found any reason to believe it actually happened.
Since there have always been women who felt they were really men, it is most likely that one was unmasked trying to become a priest. This would have started a rash of ‘what if she hadn’t been discovered’ stories, culminating in the Pope Joan myth.(wiki answers)

Ordaining of Woman in Catholic Church.

As more Protestant denominations, including the Church of England, have begun ordaining women, the Catholic Church’s teaching on the all-male priesthood has come under attack, with some claiming that the ordination of women is simply a matter of justice, and the lack of such ordination is proof that the Catholic Church does not value women. The Church’s teaching on this matter, however, cannot change. Why can’t women be priests?

    Answer:

In the Person of Christ the Head

At the most basic level, the answer to the question is simple: The New Testament priesthood is the priesthood of Christ Himself. All men who, through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, have become priests (or bishops) participate in Christ’s priesthood. And they participate in it in a very special way: They actin persona Christi Capitis, in the person of Christ, the Head of His Body, the Church.

    Christ Was a Man

Christ, of course, was a man; but some who argue for the ordination of women insist that His sex is irrelevant, that a woman can act in the person of Christ as well as a man can. This is a misunderstanding of Catholic teaching on the differences between men and women, which the Church insists are irreducible; men and women, by their natures, are suited to different, yet complementary, roles and functions.

The Tradition Established by Christ Himself

Yet even if we disregard the differences between the sexes, as many advocates of women’s ordination do, we have to face the fact that the ordination of men is an unbroken tradition that goes back not only to the Apostles but to Christ Himself. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (para. 1577) states:

“Only a baptized man (vir) validly receives sacred ordination.” The Lord Jesus chose men (viri) to form the college of the twelve apostles, and the apostles did the same when they chose collaborators to succeed them in their ministry. The college of bishops, with whom the priests are united in the priesthood, makes the college of the twelve an ever-present and ever-active reality until Christ’s return. The Church recognizes herself to be bound by this choice made by the Lord himself. For this reason the ordination of women is not possible.

Priesthood Not a Function But an Indelible Spiritual Character

Still, the argument continues, some traditions are made to be broken. But again, that misunderstands the nature of the priesthood. Ordination does not simply give a man permission to perform the functions of a priest; it imparts to him an indelible (permanent) spiritual character that makes him a priest, and since Christ and His Apostles chose only men to be priests, only men can validly become priests.

    The Impossibility of Women’s Ordination

In other words, it’s not simply that the Catholic Church does not allow women to be ordained. If a validly ordained bishop were to perform the rite of the Sacrament of Holy Orders exactly, but the person supposedly being ordained were a woman rather than a man, the woman would no more be a priest at the end of the rite than she was before it began. The bishop’s action in attempting the ordination of a woman would be both illicit (against the laws and regulations of the Church) and invalid (ineffective, and hence null and void).

The movement for women’s ordination in the Catholic Church, therefore, will never get anywhere. Other Christian denominations, to justify ordaining women, have had to change their understanding of the nature of the priesthood from one which conveys an indelible spiritual character on the man who is ordained to one in which the priesthood is treated as a mere function. But to abandon the 2,000-year-old understanding of the nature of the priesthood would be a doctrinal change. The Catholic Church could not do so and remain the Catholic Church.

  • Why Pope Benedict Resigned.HBO,Sexual Abuse

The first Pope to have resigned in 600 years,,Pope Benedict has set a lot of rumors flying around.

Some of them are listed below.

I feel it is a combination of all, but more on account of the scandals of sexual abuse by the Clergy.

    Story;

    Pope Benedict XVI
    Pope Benedict XVI
    • His Nazi History. Benedict has admitted to joining the Hitler Youth during his German childhood, calling it a “dark time” in his past. Now the Atlantic Wire has dug up Twitter users like Melanie Karin, who write, “Resigning for health reasons! Yeah. That’s it. Not because of anything scandalous like … having a Nazi youth past.”
    • Sex Scandal. Not only has a sex-abuse scandal rocked the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict is said to have personally approved an accused molester’s transfer to therapy. One tweeter directed a curious Piers Morgan (“As a Catholic, I’m not buying this”) to see an HBO documentary on the subject, Mea Maxima Culpa.-Scroll down to Watch the Documentary.
    • The Prophecy. Of course, there’s a prophecy. A bishop named Malachy allegedly proclaimed in 1140 that the 111th pope—the one after Benedict—will reign during the downfall of the church. But as the National Reviewexplains, Malachy’s predictions were likely invented for political reasons.
    • Fatal Illness. “Italians are great conspiracy theorists, so they are all looking for other reasons why he may have quit,” says a reporter for the Telegraph. “I think the most popular reason that people were coming up with was that they just think perhaps he is much more ill than we have been told.”
    • Weight of Scandal. Not exactly a conspiracy, this theory holds that church scandals have been hard on Benedict’s health. “It is difficult to imagine the degree of intrigue that is present in Rome,” a longtime friend tellsDer Spiegel.

Documentary by HBO on Sexual Abuse by the Clergy.

The film, which is both gripping and extremely upsetting, is showing on HBO this month. I watched it Saturday, as difficult as it was to do so, and strongly encourage those who can to as well.

    Via HBO:

MEA MAXIMA CULPA: SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD investigates the secret crimes of Father Lawrence Murphy, a charismatic Milwaukee priest who abused more than 200 Deaf children in a school under his control. The film documents the first known public protest against clerical sex abuse in the U.S., which led to a case that spanned three decades and ultimately resulted in a lawsuit against the pontiff himself. The investigation helped uncover documents from the secret Vatican archives that show the Pope, who must operate within the mysterious rules of the Roman Curia, as both responsible and helpless in the face of evil.

At the heart of the film is a small group of heroes – Terry Kohut, Gary Smith, Arthur Budzinksi and Bob Bolger. These courageous Deaf men set out to expose the priest who had abused them and sought to protect other children, making their voices heard. Gibney uses the voices of actors Chris Cooper, Ethan Hawke, Jamey Sheridan and John Slattery to tell the stories of men abused by Murphy. However, it is the faces and expressions of the courageous Deaf men that illustrate the indelible effect Murphy continues to have on their lives.

In addition to the Murphy case, MEA MAXIMA CULPA: SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD spotlights similar sex abuse cases in Ireland and Italy, and highlights the horrific actions of Marcial Maciel Degollado, a prominent church fundraiser and ruthless sex criminal beloved by Pope John Paul II. The film also reveals that in 2001, Cardinal Ratzinger – now His Holiness, Benedict the 16th – ordered that every sex abuse case involving a minor come through his desk, essentially establishing him as the most knowledgeable person in the world regarding priestly sexual abuse of minors.

    Magdalen-asylum-england.jpg ‎
    Magdalen-asylum-England.

‘Magdalene asylums were institutions from the eighteenth to the late-twentieth centuries ostensibly to house “fallen women“, a term used to implyfemale sexual promiscuity. Asylums for such girls and women and others believed to be of poor moral character, such as prostitutes, operated throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States for much of the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century. The first such asylum in Ireland opened on Leeson Street in Dublin in 1765, founded by Lady Arabella Denny.

In Belfast the Church of Ireland run Ulster Magdalene Asylum was founded in 1839 on Donegall Pass, while parallel institutions were run by Catholics on Ormeau Road and by Presbyterians on Whitehall Parade.[1]

Initially the mission of the asylums was to rehabilitate women back into society, but by the early twentieth century the homes had become increasingly punitive and prison-like. In most asylums, the inmates were required to undertake hard physical labour, including laundry and needle work. They endured a daily regime that included long periods of prayer and enforced silence.[citation needed]

In Ireland, such asylums were known as Magdalene laundries. It is estimated that up to 30,000 women passed through such institutions in Ireland.[2][3] The last Magdalene asylum, inWaterford in the Republic of Ireland, closed on 25 September 1996.(Wiki)

“The women were locked in and not permitted to leave.  And if they tried to get away, the cops would catch them and bring them back. They were quite literally Catholic slave labor working for the government and even Guinness, which would pay the laundries for the women’s slave labor.

Half of the girls enslaved in these Catholic Church prisons were under the age of 23.  The youngest entrant was 9 years old.

When I was a young girl, my mother — an abusive, less-than-perfect parent — encouraged me to shoplift. After being caught once too often, I spent 18 months in An Grianán Training Centre, an institution in Dublin for girls with behavioral problems, at the recommendation of a social worker. An Grianán was one of the now-infamous church-sponsored “Magdalene laundries,” which housed pregnant teenagers and uncooperative young women. We worked in the basement, washing priests’ clothes in sinks with cold water and bars of soap. We studied math and typing. We had limited contact with our families. We earned no wages. One of the nuns, at least, was kind to me and gave me my first guitar.

No apology from the Catholic Church

Absent from any of the media reports on the scandal that I could find was an apology from the Catholic Church which operated the Magdalene laundries and made handsome profits from contracts with government and hotels.  Oh, found one. It seems the Catholic Church blew the women off.  I know, you’re as surprised as I am:

Victims of the child sex abuse scandals that have rocked the Irish Catholic Church have received an apology and compensation, but no one has taken responsibility for what happened in the laundries. Cardinal Sean Brady, the most senior Catholic cleric in Ireland, met with Justice for Magdalenes in 2010. He said “by today’s standards much of what happened at that time is difficult to comprehend” but that it was a matter for the religious orders who ran the laundries to deal with. The religious orders have declined to meet the women.

The Irish Cardinal wasn’t interested in hearing from people who were hurt and abused — if not sexually, certainly physically and mentally, by the Catholic Church.  And it’s not the Catholic Church’s fault. Where have we heard that story before?

The laundries were run by nuns, many of whom treated the women sent to work there as slaves:

Senator McAleese’s inquiry found that half of the girls and women put to work in the laundries were under the age of 23 and 40%, more than 4,000, spent more than a year incarcerated.

Fifteen percent spent more than five years in the laundries while the average stay was calculated at seven months.

The youngest death on record was 15, and the oldest 95, the report found.

The Irish state is also implicated in the scandal because the police would take women to the asylums after arresting them for trivial offenses and would return runaways.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny has apologised for the stigma and conditions suffered by women who were inmates of the Magdalene laundries.

Mr Kenny said the laundries had operated in a “harsh and uncompromising Ireland,” but he stopped short of a formal apology from the government.

About 10,000 women passed through the laundries in the Irish Republic between 1922 and 1996, a report has revealed.

The laundries were Catholic-run workhouses that operated in Ireland.

Mr Kenny expressed his sympathies with survivors and the families of those who died.

    Magdalene Laundries

Picture from BBC drama sinners about life in a Magdalene laundry

    • Originally termed Magdalene Asylums the first in Ireland was opened in Dublin in 1765, for Protestant girls

    • First Catholic home was founded in Cork in 1809

    • Envisaged as short-term refuges for ‘fallen women’ they became long-term institutions and penitents were required to work, mostly in laundries on the premises

    • They extended to take in unmarried mothers, women with learning difficulties and girls who had been abused

    • The facilities were self-supporting and the money generated by the laundries paid for them

    • Between 1922 and 1996 there were 10 such laundries in the Republic of Ireland

    • Many Irish institutions, such as the army, government departments, hotels and even Guinness had contracts with Magdalene laundries

    • The women toiled behind locked doors unable to leave after being admitted and while the laundries were paid, they received no wages

    • The last Magdalene asylum in Ireland, in Waterford, closed in 1996

    • The congregations which ran them were the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, the Religious Sisters of Charity and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd

He added that the report found no evidence of sexual abuse in the laundries and that 10% of inmates were sent by their families and 19% entered of their own volition.

The inquiry chaired by Senator Martin McAleese found 2,124 of those detained in the institutions were sent by the authorities.

There will be a debate in the Irish parliament in two weeks time giving members time to read the 1,000-page document.

ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI
TO THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE PLENARY Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace

    Consistory Hall
    Monday, December 3, 2012

    Cardinals,
Venerable Brothers in the Episcopate and in the Priesthood,
    Dear Brothers and Sisters!

I am pleased to welcome you on the occasion of your Plenary Assembly. I greet Cardinal President, whom I thank for his courteous words, and Bishop Secretary, officials of the Department and all of you, Members and Consultants, gathered for this important moment of reflection and planning. Your assembly is held in the ‘ Year of Faith , after the Synod dedicated to the new evangelization , and – as has been said – the fiftieth anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and – in a few months – the encyclical Pacem in Terris of Blessed Pope John XXIII . It is a context that already per se offers multiple stimuli.

The social doctrine, as taught by the Blessed Pope John Paul II , is an integral part of the evangelising mission of the Church (cf. Enc. Centesimus Annus , 54), and all the more reason it should be considered important for the new evangelization (cf. ibid ., 5 , Enc. Caritas in Veritate , 15 ). Accepting Jesus Christ and his Gospel, as well as in personal life, even in social relationships, we become bearers of a vision of man, of his dignity, his freedom and relationality, which is marked by transcendence, both horizontally and vertically . Integral anthropology, which is derived from Revelation and the exercise of natural reason, depend on the foundation and meaning of human rights and duties, as we were reminded Blessed John XXIII right in Pacem in Terris (cf. n. 9). The rights and duties, in fact, they did not as the sole basis for the social conscience of the people, but primarily depend on the natural moral law inscribed by God in the conscience of every person, and thus ultimately the truth about man and society .

The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI, has called for the establishment of World Government and a New World Order.

In a speech made at the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace on Monday December 3 2012, the Pope called for the “construction of a world community, with a corresponding authority,” to serve the “common good of the human family”

The pope was quoted as saying:

The proposed body (World Government) would not be a superpower, concentrated in the hands of a few, which would dominate all peoples, exploiting the weakest.

THE pope also described his vision as a “moral force” or moral authority that has the “power to influence in accordance with reason, that is, a participatory authority, limited by law in its jurisdiction……

Condemning the “idolatry of the market,” the document states that the “economic and financial crisis which the world is going through calls everyone, individuals and peoples, to examine in depth the principles and the cultural and moral values at the basis of social coexistence.”

The planned implosion of the global economy “has revealed behaviors like selfishness, collective greed and hoarding of goods on a great scale.”

The 18-page document, entitled “Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of a Global Public Authority,” declares global economics needs an “ethic of solidarity” among rich and poor nations…

    New World order Theory.

Right-wing populist advocacy groups with a producerist worldview, such as the John Birch Society, disseminated a multitude of conspiracy theories in the 1960s claiming that the governments of both the United States and the Soviet Union were controlled by a cabal of corporate internationalists, greedy bankers and corrupt politicians intent on using the United Nations as the vehicle to create the “One World Government”. This right-wing anti-globalist conspiracism would fuel the Bircher campaign for U.S. withdrawal from the U.N.. American writer Mary M. Davison, in her 1966 booklet The Profound Revolution, traced the alleged New World Order conspiracy to the creation of the U.S. Federal Reserve System in 1913 by international bankers, who she claimed later formed the Council on Foreign Relations in 1921 as the shadow government. At the time the booklet was published, “international bankers” would have been interpreted by many readers as a reference to a postulated “international Jewish banking conspiracy” masterminded by the Rothschilds.[12]

Claiming that the term “New World Order” is used by a secretive elite dedicated to the destruction of all national sovereignties, American writer Gary Allen, in his 1971 book None Dare Call It Conspiracy, 1974 book Rockefeller: Campaigning for the New World Order and 1987 book Say “No!” to the New World Order, articulated the anti-globalist theme of much current right-wing populist conspiracism in the U.S.. Thus, after the fall of communism in the early 1990s, the main demonized scapegoat of the American far right shifted seamlessly from crypto-communists who plotted on behalf of the Red Menace to globalists who plot on behalf of the New World Order. The relatively painless nature of the shift was due to growing right-wing populist opposition to corporate internationalism but also in part to the basic underlying apocalyptic millenarian paradigm, which fed the Cold War and the witch-hunts of the McCarthy period.[12]

In his 11 September 1990 Toward a New World Order speech to a joint session of the U.S. Congress, President George H. W. Bush described his objectives for post-Cold-War global governancein cooperation with post-Soviet states:

Until now, the world we’ve known has been a world divided—a world of barbed wire and concrete block, conflict and cold war. Now, we can see a new world coming into view. A world in which there is the very real prospect of a new world order. In the words of Winston Churchill, a “world order” in which “the principles of justice and fair play … protect the weak against the strong …” A world where the United Nations, freed from cold war stalemate, is poised to fulfill the historic vision of its founders. A world in which freedom and respect for human rights find a home among all nations.

The New York Times observed that progressives were denouncing this new world order as a rationalization for American imperial ambitions in the Middle East, while conservatives rejected new security arrangements altogether and fulminated about any possibility of U.N. revival.[13] However, Chip Berlet, an American investigative reporter specializing in the study of right-wing movements in the U.S., writes:

When President Bush announced his new foreign policy would help build a New World Order, his phrasing surged through the Christian and secular hard right like an electric shock, since the phrase had been used to represent the dreaded collectivist One World Government for decades. Some Christians saw Bush as signaling the End Times betrayal by a world leader. Secular anticommunists saw a bold attempt to smash US sovereignty and impose a tyrannical collectivist system run by the United Nations.[12]

    KING,

In view of your low grade… I will not dignify your name with either a Mr. or a Reverend or a Dr. And, your last name calls to mind only the type of King such as King Henry the VIII…

King, look into your heart. You know you are a complete fraud and a great liability to all of us Negroes. White people in this country have enough frauds of their own but I am sure they don’t have one at this time anywhere near your equal. You are no clergyman and you know it. I repeat you are a colossal fraud and an evil, vicious one at that. You could not believe in God… Clearly you don’t believe in any personal moral principles.

King, like all frauds your end is approaching. You could have been our greatest leader. You, even at an early age have turned out to be not a leader but a dissolute, abnormal moral imbecile. We will now have to depend on our older leaders like Wilkins, a man of character and thank God we have others like him. But you are done. Your “honorary” degrees, your Nobel Prize (what a grim farce) and other awards will not save you. King, I repeat you are done.

No person can overcome facts, not even a fraud like yourself… I repeat — no person can argue successfully against facts… Satan could not do more. What incredible evilness… King you are done.

The American public, the church organizations that have been helping — Protestant, Catholic and Jews will know you for what you are — an evil, abnormal beast. So will others who have backed you. You are done.

King, there is only one thing left for you to do. You know what it is. You have just 34 days in which to do it (this exact number has been selected for a specific reason, it has definite practical significance). You are done. There is but one way out for you. You better take it before your filthy, abnormal fraudulent self is bared to the nation.
