    With an Electoral population of 831 Millions, Eletions for The central Government is being conducted in States and Union Territories for 543 Lok Sabha

    (Federal Government seats) seats. ( between 7April and 12 May 2014).

     

    (This is an article I wrote for a French Magazine, taking into account the International Audience)

     

    The Cost to the Election Commission which regulates and conducted Elections is Rs, 35 Billion.

    The Political Parties will be spending US $ 5 Billion, second highest in the world after the US Presidential election 2012.

     

    (This does not take into account the Black Money being spent by the parties and the candidates)

     

    As general elections draw closer, ‘unaccounted money’ may account for over one-third of total Rs 30,000 crore estimated to be spent on these polls, a study says.

    While various national and regional parties are estimated to spend Rs 8,000-10,000 crore for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, candidates at their

    individual level may spend a whopping amount of Rs 10,000-13,000 crore, as per the study conducted by research think-tank CMS.

     

    These figures include both official and unaccounted expenses.

     

    Till the 10th of April, the Election Commission has caught about Rs,500 Crore.

     

    The Election Commission has ordered seizure of money over Rs.Ten lakhs without proper documentation; Banks, Airports,Railroads ,Bus Stations are n the watch

     

    The campaign trail is vast and all the known forms and some novel methods are used.

     

    Internet ads, blogs,Paid News by TV Channels and Print Media,Media Advertising,Mobile Calls, SMS,Posters,Buntings,Leaflets, .. all tricks are resorted to.

     

    Unique style of garnering votes in Tamil Nadu are,

     

    Dropping a 500 Rupee Note in an Aarthi plate(traditional way of welcoming a visitor, where a plate with Turmeric powder and Vermillion is dissolved in water and shown to the Guest)

     

    Attending personal functions like the birth of a baby, Naming the child, attending marriages, and even Death and offering Cash or donations in kind.

     

    Offering Cheap country liquor, Biryani, a none veg delicacy free of cost.

     

    Carting people to attend Party Public meetings in Lorries,Trucks, offering them Food, Liquor and Cash .

     

    Visiting people at Home and offering them cash.

     

    Falling at the feet of Elders and at times even children!

     

    The Ruling Party at the centre in the UPA(United Progressive Alliance ) led by the century old Indian National Congress.

     

    It has a Coalition of State Parties with their own agenda.

     

    Against this is the NDA(National Democratic Alliance), led by the Opposition The BJP, Bharatiya Janata Party.

     

    It also has a patch work of Regional parties.

     

    Then we have a motley group of Third front , which belongs to none of the groupings above and are awaiting the results to form a Coalition sans the Congress and BJP.

     

    The Ruling Party is besieged with scams galore starting with Rs.i,86,000 Lakh crore 2 G Spectrum allotment in Telecom Sector,Helicopter Scam involving crores of Rupees,ISRO (Space Agency),Housing irregularities and many more.

     

    Also there were instances of moral turpitude by the senior party members.

     

    The economy , despite claims that the Macro economy is performing well, the price of essentials are shooting up.

     

    There is a Prime Minister who wields no power but the Government is controlled by the leader of the Congress party, an Italian woman , the wife of Late Rajiv Gandhi, ex-Prime Minister of India.

     

    The Family has been ruling India for three generations starting from Jawaharlal Nehru, through Indira Gandhi, his daughter and by her son Rajiv Gandhi.

     

    Now the party has indicated that Rahul Gandhi, son of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial Candidate.

     

    The Opposition has announced Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, of the BJP party.

     

    Curiously India does not have a Presidential form of Government.

     

    It has a Federal set up where the leader of the major party in the Elections outings ,shall form the Government!

     

    The reason is that the opposition has no Policies different from the Ruling party.

     

    But the BJP off and on plays the Hindu Card, claiming that the Hindus are not treated equally in what is essentially Hindu Country , with the Muslims.

     

    The ruling Congress party plays the Muslim card .

     

    And both the parties play the Caste Card regularly.

     

    Even now, the candidates are selected based on the caste considerations, that is the candidate belonging to the caste of the Majority voters are selected.

     

    Both the parties are equally shy of giving equal opportunities for women despite proclamations to the contrary.

     

    On the security issues there is no difference between both the parties.

     

    Or On the Economic Policies.

     

    So each party is accusing the other of corruption .

     

    While the Congress is harping on Stability factor , the BJP is calling the Congress as Corrupt.

     

    Then the deciding factor will be the regional parties, who can decide the formation of the Government when the results are likely to be fragmented.

     

    Though the opinion polls have revealed a high gain for BJP and the lowest ever seats for the Congress, no party, except the BJP shall get simple majority.

     

    This would necessitate the support of the regional parties.

     

    They shall go in for their pound of flesh in terms of Cabinet berths!

     

    And they have their regional agenda which will be difficult to fulfil in a federal setup, ( the regional parties also know this,)

     

    The major States that have more Lok Sabha seats,shall decide the formation of the Government are UP (80),West Bengal (42),Maharashtra(48),AP (420, Tamil Nadu,Bihar (40 each)

     

    The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is nurturing the ambitions of becoming the Prime Minister if both the congress and BJP do not get simple majority.

     

    And the Chief Minister of Bihar too has this ambition.

     

    Therefore the result is likely to be , as of now, the BJP might get more seats way ahead of Congress , yet shall fall short of majority.

     

    The Regional parties might play a vital role.

     

    Yet the charisma of the BJP prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi might sweep the polls because of the inexperience of Rahul Gandhi who shoots himself in the mouth..

    Election is on for one seat for Mizoram on 11 April.

     

    Twenty-two Villagers near Delhi travelled by rowing a boat across the Yamuna River,walked for 4 kilometres to cast their votes, covering a total of 90km on 10 April.

     

    In Tamil Nadu, a Party’s candidate was withdrawn to accommodate an opposition party candidate, who joined the Party 48 hours before!

     

    An actor who was a Leader of the opposition in Taml Nadu, beat up the candidate in the last Elections in Tamil Nadu.

     

     

    He usually comes to Public Meetings roaring drunk and does not even remember the Candidates’ Name.!

     

    Many actors are in the fray now, but no heavy weights now.

     

    Four actors have become Chief Ministers and were very powerful and popular and in fact one is now the powerful chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and

    a contender for the Prime Minister’s Post.

    Robert Vadra, along with his mother Maureen Vadra, owns a company called Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd, which is a partner in a partnership firm that owns business hotel Hilton Garden Inn in South Delhi, along with DLF Hotel Holdings and others. This happened in March, 2011 as Robert Vadra made a low-key entry into Real estate business with the association of DLF.

    Vadra told Economic Times, “The Hilton Garden Inn Hotel in Saket is a small business hotel. I have interest in hospitality and am happy to be part of the hotel. I have known the DLF people for a long time and they are friends of mine. I had wanted to invest in real estate and one thing led to another. Right now, I can only be part of a small hotel. If I were taking favours from people I would be doing far bigger things. But I am doing this on my own. I can’t expand immediately but I hope to expand a few years down the line.”

    There have been allegations from Indian politicians that Robert Vadra has links to Commonwealth games scam, because DLF was a major contractor of the Commonwealth games that were held in India in 2010. This is not yet proved. Recently, Arvind Kejriwal of India against corruption claimed that DLF gave generous loans up to 65 crores to Vadra companies, some without collateral. Arvind Kejriwal and the opposition party BJP demanded the government to probe into these corrupt property deals and the possible benefits Robert Vadra may have received.     Following these accusations, Robert Vadra responded saying:

    “I am a private law abiding citizen who has been engaged in business over the last 21 years. The allegations levelled against me by Shri Kejriwal and Shri Bhushan are utterly false, entirely baseless and defamatory. My business transactions are fully reflected in financial statements filed before appropriate government authorities in compliance with the law. They are available in the public domain to anyone interested in knowing the truth. I am saddened by the attempt of Shri Kejriwal and Shri Bhushan to deliberately misrepresent numbers contained in my financial statements, manufacture lies and malign my family in order to gain cheap publicity for them and for the launch of their political party.”

    DLF explained:

    “At no stage was a interest free loan ever given to the Skylight group. There were two sets of Business Advances against purchase of property, one of which amounting to Rs. 50 crores resulted in a satisfactory conclusion of purchase of commercial land and the second advance of Rs. 15 crores was fully refunded.”

    The government ruled out their appeal to probe into business dealings between Robert Vadra and the realty giant DLF, while IAC claim to fight further and BJP Party is keen to raise the issue in Parliament.

    The allegations linking Robert Vadra with IPL, DLF and Kolkata Knight Riders started after a press release of Dr.Subramanian Swamy, President of the Janata Party of India, in 2010, linking the controversy in IPL bidding to Congress MP Mr. Rajiv Shukla, who is also the Chairman of BCCI’s Finance Committee.     Subramanian Swamy has also charged Union home minister P Chidambaram and Robert Vadra with involvement in the multi-crore 2G Spectrum scam. Below is his quote:

    “Vadra has 20% stake in Unitech, one of the telecom operators which benefited through the allocation of second generation mobile telephony spectrum by former union minister A Raja. He is the beneficiary of illegal payments generated through the spectrum scam and Commonwealth Games contracts.”

    But this is not yet proved.

    Priyanka Gandhi Vadra along with her husband Robert Vadra was a director in less known charter services provider called Blue Breeze Trading. IAC team alleges that this company received corporate favours in the form of inter-corporate loans. Also, the financial transactions of this company are reportedly not transparent.     Ottavio Quattrocchi is an Italian businessman who was criminally charged for bribes in Bofors scandal until early 2009 in India. You can read all about him and the controvertial dealing of bofors scandal here. There were speculations that Ottavio Quattrocchi came close to Rajiv Gandhi through his wife Sonia Gandhi, and Ottavio Quattrocchi’s financier son, Massimo Quattrocchi, is believed to be a childhood friend of Sonia Gandhi’s children Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi. It is believed that Robert Vadra met Priyanka Gandhi through his alleged expatriate friend Ottavio Quattrocchi. The links between Quattrocchi and Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi were also brought into light by one of the press releases of Dr. Subramanian Swamy, claiming to show related proofs as well.     It is a fact that Robert Vadra has special privilege of not to be frisked at civil airports along with president of India and other VVIPs. In the image section, you can see a picture of the order of Indian Bureau of Civil Aviation Security showing Robert Vadra’s name at last. When a group called RTI Anonymous filed an RTI questioning this special privilege given to Robert Vadra, the ministry of RTI replied saying that this exemption is because he is a “special case”.

    While it is reported that the Army tried to destroy the Documents relating to Kargil War, the Congress, in the opposition then made a cursory

    noise,possibly a reciprocal arrangement for BJP not putting up adequate pressure on Security issues.

     

    And note the Candidates being put up by the Congress against Modi!

    Story:

     

    “Establishment India and its non-official spokespersons insist, despite a string of media exposes, that there were no institutional military failures in the months before the war. Over the last 14 months, the most damning pieces of evidence of such failur es have been discredited and suppressed. Claims that Brigadier Surinder Singh, the then Commander of the 121 Brigade, warned of possible conflict have been flatly rejected by officials as untrue. ..

     

    The documents also show that his superiors, including former Chief of the Army Staff V.P. Malik, refused to act on these warnings, and even blocked 121 Brigade initiatives to defend Kargil more intensively. Wh ile the broad contents of the 121 Brigade papers have figured in several publications, including Frontline, this is the first time the original documents have been acquired and made available to the public.

    WHAT MALIK WAS TOLD

    On August 25, 1998, Major R.K. Dwivedi, the Brigade-Major of the 121 Brigade, sent out a letter marked 124/GSD/Vis. To this letter were attached the contents of Surinder Singh’s proposed briefing of Malik on the security situation in Kargil, scheduled to take place during the Chief of the Army Staff’s visit to Kargil the following month. The 42-point document was, during the final presentation, backed by slides.

    Right at the outset, the 121 Brigade briefing paper analysed, in terse military shorthand, the possible “En(emy) Pattern” for the coming months. Pakistan, paragraph 5(a) noted, would seek to keep conflict “alive after (the Pokhran-II) nuc(lear) blasts an d in view (of the) SAARC m(ee)t(in)g of 29 Jul(y) 98 and now for (the) NAM m(ee)t(in)g.”..

    3 Division took the best part of a fortnight to get back to this letter. Major V.K. Chattre, General Staff Officer 2 to the officiating Colonel General Staff, wasted few words. “Your proposal is not approved,” letter 1124/Trg flatly said. 15 Corps Headqu arters in Srinagar, at that time in charge of the 3 Infantry Division, did not see fit to intervene in the debate. Requests for additional troops were not even graced with a reply. One letter generated by the 121 Brigade’s Major R.K. Dwivedi, on behalf o f Surinder Singh, marked 101/GS(Ops)/ANE, pointed to a recent mine explosion on the highway, and underlined the need for troops to protect the road and vulnerable villages. No troops were deployed. Indeed, despite the 121 Brigade’s protests, the 9 Mahar Regiment was actually withdrawn, leaving the Yaldor area wide open.

    FIVE HUNDRED IRREGULARS, AND A ZOO

    Nothing better illustrates the space between the worlds of 3 Division Headquarters and the 121 Brigade than two letters that form part of the papers Frontline’s investigation has unearthed.

    On May 16, 1998, 3 Division sent out instructions to all its field units informing them of their commanding officer, Major-General V.S. Budhwar’s new pet project: building a zoo for the sake of Leh‘s few thousand residents. Lieutenant-Colonel U.K. Singh sent out a second missive, marked 6361/9/ZOO/Q1 on June 8, 1998. “Please ensure,” the Colonel’s letter read, “that various types of wild animals/birds are procured and despatched to zoo at Leh at your earliest.” “Cages required for transportation of anim als/birds,” it continued, “will be made under arrangements of respective b(riga)de(s).” “No representation,” the Colonel concluded sternly, “will be entertained.”

  • Vote Narendra Modi Despite BJP 10 Reasons

    Right man in the wrong Party.

    Political parties find their election candidates embarrassing at times.

    And the candidate , in general, has one goal, to defeat the opponent at the Polls.

    Narendra Modi is one such.

    The party he belongs to, at times, embarrasses him.

    BJP is not  a bad party, of late it is becoming a divided House.

    It is so democratic that you an hear a virtual Babel Tower on every issue, with the result,the issues being debated, are lost.

    Despite knowing pretty well it is Narendra Modi who has caught the imagination  of a disillusioned people,many BJP leaders want to play spoil sport over Modi.

    While people do want Narendra Modi as Prime Minister of India, it is the BJP’s antics and funny strategies that make one pause,,

    Is it worth voting BJP to ensure Narendra Modi coming to Power?

    Such is the pull of warring factions.

    If Modi commands respect and affection it is because of His forthrightness, calling a spade as one and his commitment to the oft touted now diluted principles  of the BJP.

    Despite the confusion BJP had made in stitching together alliances for the elections, this is why BJP should be voted to power, if only to ensure that Modi becomes the PM.

    Pray that BJP does not throw the spanner in the works.

    Modis’ running of the Gujarat has been one of transpareny and he minces no words when he implements any programme for the welfare of the State.

    On Free distribution of power , he declared that electricity costs money, he can not afford to offer freebies and people should pay for it.

    Result Gujarat is more than self-sufficient in Power in India, the only one.

    Or look at the way he appoints enquiry into his own deeds if necessary.

    Or his wooing of Business, at the same time he is not being run by the corporate.

    He nails them when warranted.

    Infrastructure, Roads, Public distribution, way ahead of the other States.

    On Godhra Riots, the Center has tried all the avenues open to it , to sully his name.

    Special team, CBI and even the Supreme Court.

    Embarrassing for them all of them have given a clean chit to Modi in the riots in Gujarat.

    The socalled “Muslims living in fear in Gujarat’ is nullified by the declaration of the Community that Modi is not against them, but terrorism

    2.Administration Open honest and swift

    He is accessible, unlike the other able administrator, Jayalalithaa the CM of Tamil Nadu.

    3.Modi  is clear on his foreign policy be it Pakistan, Bangladesh or the US.

    He does not seem to be cowed by the US nor rattled by the fact he might lose votes if he is soft with Pakistan

    On immigrants in Assam, West Bengal , he is for sending them back or at least regulating them.

    4.As of date none of the corruption charges made against his has stuck for there is nothing to stick.

    5.He has not or is presiding over scams, starting from Bofors, through 2G, ISRO-Dewas-Antrix,,CWG,Maharashtra irrigation,Thorium,Adarsh,defence coffin purchase…

    6.Nor has he had his name implicated in an Italian Court for Corruption in Westland Helicopter deal.

    7.He does not have a Swiss bank account.

    8.He was not thrust as the prime Ministerial Candidate as Congress has done.

    9.He does not foist Cases.

    10.He stands by his Officers, does not make them scape goats.

    India has a Party system and does not have a Presidential form of governance.

    BJP has placed the cart before the Horse by projection Narendra Modi as the would be PM..

    Hope BJP does not upset the Cart.

    Veerappa Moily, Petroleum Minister went on TV stating that whenever the Government tries to effect some changes in Petroleum pricing, the Ministers are being threatened.

    No minister can be sure of his berth in the Cabinet if he dares to challenge the Business Lobby.

    More cozy,better for you.

    No wonder there is high pressure lobbying by the Cabinet Post aspiration.

    As a matter of fact, the Business lobbies decide who should be given tickets even!

    These companies have Liaison officers like Nira Radia who fix things.

    Listen to Radia tapes in my site, you will know how the fixing is done for Minister ship and for even Media fixing.

    We have a Law on paer that each party must declare the information of Donations.

    But what is reported is only a small negligible portion of what is collected.

    “Between 2009-11 period, the Congress party earned almost Rs 750 crore out of which Rs 500 crore were from selling party coupons.  While the party got Rs 111 .73 crore from donations, it earned Rs 44.11 crore from interest. Interestingly, the party got only 12 per cent of the donations that was above Rs 20,000 and about which the party must give the details of the donors. So the party has not declared how it got approximately Rs 600 crore…

    Even the BJP has not been any different. The party earned Rs 425 crore during the 2009-11 period out of which Rs 300 crore was from voluntary donations. Approximately Rs 30 crore was as lifelong contribution fund and Rs 3 crore from interest.  The party got just 22 per cent of the money from donors who gave more than Rs 20,000.

    Experts say that political parties fear that they are brought under the RTI, then they will have to share details bout their earnings. Between 2010 and 2011 the Congress received only Rs 20,000 or more from only 417 donors while 502 donations made to the BJP were above the Rs 20,000 mark. AIADMK, Shiromani Akali Dal and BSP got no single donations above Rs 20,00..
