  • Anna Hazrae-Lokpal Committee-Why bring in Secularism,politics?

Bharatmata Mata banner is not the property of RSS.

    Anna is naive, unlike politicians.

    That’s why people trust him.

Anna praised Modi for his work, especially the way he is taking Gujarat forward.

Apolitical does not mean not to appreciate that which is good.

By the way sound bytes are heard about Anna’s Committee being ‘Non secular’

Why bring Religion into Crusade against corruption?

At this rate some people might want  reservation in the Committee.

These sort of arguments are meant to derail the Lokpal issue.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh Friday said people close to Anna Hazare are “somehow close” to the BJP and questioned the inclusion of father-son lawyer duo of Shanti and Prashant Bhushan in the drafting committee on Lokpal Bill.

He also cautioned “simple and naive” Hazare about people close to him, saying they have “their own cause” to push.

Singh disapproved of Hazare’s threat to go on protest if Parliament does not pass the Lokpal Bill by August 15 and his praise for Gujarat CM Narendra Modi saying that the veteran Gandhian should be careful of what he was speaking.

Describing Hazare as a “simple, naive, simple-minded villager” who is being “exploited by smart people from town area”, Singh said, “I can’t call him to be supporting the RSS or the BJP cause. But he should be careful with some associates he chose.”

“The banner which was used as the backdrop (at the protest site) Bharatmata resembled that of the RSS. People who are close to the Gandhian were somehow close to the BJP also,” Singh said on CNN-IBN’s ‘Devil’s Advocate’.

Anna’s statement on Modi was in response to a specific question asked at a press conference. He just said that good work had been done in rural areas of Bihar and Gujarat. Anna has already clarified that his statement was based on what he has been reading about these two states in the media. He has also clarified he strongly believes in communal harmony and is against any kind of communal violence.

The strong secular credentials of the movement are clear from the fact that every evening, at Jantar Mantar, there used to be “sarv dharm prarthna” of all religions. Mufti Shamoom Qasmi and archbishop ofDelhi Vincent M Concessao are among the founders of this movement. Mahmood A Madani has been an active supporter.

Some people are asking also how were the names for the committee decided by the civil society. The whole movement was around Jan Lokpal bill. Therefore, such people should be there on the committee who could explain each clause and section of this bill in committee meetings. Those who drafted the bill were natural choices.

    NEW DELHI 00001972 002 OF 004

    4. (SBU) The special session of parliament to consider the confidence vote will begin on July 21 and conclude with a vote on July 22. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Vayalar Ravi claimed on July 15 that the government would prevail in the July 22 confidence vote with over 280 votes cast in its favor. Kuldip Bishnoi, an estranged Congress Party MP who had been suspended for floating the idea of forming his own party in December 2007, confirmed his intention to defect in the confidence vote. (This development was apparently expected by party insiders and not a leading indicator of further fragmentation within the party.) Consulate Chennai reported on July 17 that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has publicly stated it will vote against the UPA. One of its three members of parliament has broken from the party, but is unlikely to support the government because the TRS has positioned the trust vote as a statehood issue, so voting for the UPA would mean voting against Telangana interests.

TRS would go against the Government ,not because of Nuclear issue per se, but because of its ‘position on Telengana’ Strange Logic of Patriotism!

” It also claimed that PM Singh was upset with the BJP for allegedly recanting on an “”understanding”” that it would support the deal. The article concludes that if the government survives the July 22 vote, PM Singh’s priority would be to implement flagship social programs to thank his party for rallying behind him.

BJP had an ‘understanding’-and recanted What was the understanding and why was it recanted?

    Votes For Sale – – –

    8. (SBU) Behind the scenes, the Congress Party machine is working overtime. Sonia Gandhi reportedly plans to meet Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Shibu Soren and Janata Dal Secular (JD-S) leader H.D. Deve Gowda. Retaining the support of JMM’s five seats and the JD-S’s three seats is reportedly vital to the UPA government’s strategy. In exchange for retaining the support of the three votes of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), the Congress Party has reportedly pledged its support to rename Lucknow’s Amausi airport after Chaudhary Charan Singh, father of RLD leader Ajit Charan Singh, who may also get a cabinet seat.

Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi were committed to the nuclear initiative and had conveyed this message clearly to the party. Sharma said that PM Singh and others were trying to work on the Akali Dal (8 votes) through financier Sant Chatwal and others, but unfortunately it did not work out.
    Going through a Financier?’
‘It did not work out’ Amount not sufficient?
    10. (S) Sharma’s political aide Nachiketa Kapur mentioned to an Embassy staff member in an aside on July 16 that Ajit Singh’s RLD had been paid Rupees 10 crore (about $2.5 million) for each of their four MPs to support the government. Kapur mentioned that money was not an issue at all, but the crucial thing was to ensure that those who took the money would vote for the government. Kapur showed the Embassy employee two chests containing cash and said that around Rupees 50-60 crore (about $25 million) was lying around the house for use as pay-offs.

    11. (S) Another Congress Party insider told PolCouns that Minister of Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath is also helping to spread largesse. “”Formerly he could only offer small planes as bribes,”” according to this interlocutor, now he can pay for votes with jets.””

“”What If””s: No Vote or a UPA Defeat

Satish Sharma cannily declared in Press meet that’Nachiketa has never been my aide’
He did not say he does not know him.

NEW DELHI: Five days before the Manmohan Singh government faced a crucial vote of confidence on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal in 2008, a political aide to Congress leader Satish Sharma showed a U.S. Embassy employee “two chests containing cash” he said was part of a bigger fund of Rs. 50 crore to Rs. 60 crore that the party had assembled to purchase the support of MPs. The aide also claimed the four MPs belonging to Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal had already been paid Rs. 10 crore each to ensure they voted the right way on the floor of the Lok Sabha.

In a cable, dated July 17, 2008, sent to the State Department ( 162458: secret), accessed by The Hindu through WikiLeaks, U.S. Charge d’Affaires Steven White wrote about a visit the Embassy’s Political Counselor paid to Satish Sharma, who is described as “a Congress Party MP in the Rajya Sabha … and a close associate of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi considered to be a very close family friend of Sonia Gandhi.”

Mr. Sharma told the U.S. diplomat that he and others in the party were working hard to ensure the government won the confidence vote on July 22. After describing the approaches the Congress leader said had been made to the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Akali Dal, Mr. White drops a bombshell of a revelation:

“Sharma’s political aide Nachiketa Kapur mentioned to an Embassy staff member in an aside on July 16 that Ajit Singh’s RLD had been paid Rupees 10 crore (about $2.5 million) for each of their four MPs to support the government. Kapur mentioned that money was not an issue at all, but the crucial thing was to ensure that those who took the money would vote for the government.”

Lest this should be construed by the visiting diplomats as an empty boast, Mr. Sharma’s aide put his money where his mouth was: “Kapur showed the Embassy employee two chests containing cash and said that around Rupees 50-60 crore (about $25 million) was lying around the house for use as pay-offs.”

Independently, Mr. Sharma told the Political Counselor “that PM Singh and others were trying to work on the Akali Dal (8 votes) through financier Sant Chatwal and others, but unfortunately it did not work out.” He said “the Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi were committed to the nuclear initiative and had conveyed this message clearly to the party.” Efforts were also on to try and get the Shiv Sena to abstain. Further, “Sharma mentioned that he was also exploring the possibility of trying to get former Prime Minister Vajpayee’s son-in-law Ranjan Bhattacharya to speak to BJP representatives to try to divide the BJP ranks.”

The cable makes it clear the Congress campaign to buy votes was not confined to the cash-filled war chests that Nachiketa Kapur and Satish Sharma had gathered.

“Another Congress Party insider told PolCouns that Minister of Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath is also helping to spread largesse. ‘Formerly he could only offer small planes as bribes,’” according to this interlocutor, ‘now he can pay for votes with jets.’”

Despite these efforts, the U.S. Embassy concluded that the UPA maintained only a “precarious lead” in the forthcoming confidence vote. “Our best guess at this time show the government maintaining its slim majority with the anticipated vote count at about 273 in favor, 251 opposed, and 19 abstentions.”

The prediction was impressively close to the mark. Prime Minister Singh got 275 votes in favour with 256 against and 10 abstentions.

Just before the vote, the BJP produced cash on the floor of the House and alleged that this was the money the government had used to try and buy the support of MPs. But subsequent investigations ran aground. The secret U.S. Embassy cable, however, is likely to reignite Opposition allegations that bribery was resorted to on a massive scale to ensure the UPA won the 2008 vote of confidence.

The fact that Congress politicians could speak so freely to American diplomats about their bribing spree during the run up to the confidence vote — and that the latter could be so blasé about the subversion of democracy — underlines the all-encompassing but ultimately corrosive nature of the “strategic partnership” the two governments were trying to build.

As for Mr. Kapur, his candid display of crores of rupees to be used by the Congress as “pay offs” for the trust vote was not seen by the U.S. Embassy as compromising his democratic credentials in any way. In November 2008, he was sent to the U.S. under the State Department’s I-Vote 2008 programme as an observer for that year’s presidential election. “The move to invite international observers”, he wrote in a blog post, “reflects the open and democratic nature of the American society.”

  • Corporates running India?

    The BJP logo
    Image via Wikipedia

In fact corporates are  selling the State and Cabinet posts.

As has been pointed out, Radiagate and the issues involved do not belong to one party.

It is endemic to Indian polity.

Now one group has been caught the other is shouting.

Both are guilty of the same offence.

JP will duck on Yeddiyurappa,Reddy brothers,Shibu Soren et all.

They will keep mum on BJP connections to Radia.

Who knows , they might have had, or still have ,not Radia or some other Kedia?

In the melee there is a chorus for making ‘Lobbying ‘ legal under guide lines, justifying on the ground that is being done in US.

Ask ordinary citizens of US.They are being ruled by sanctioned clique.

Healthy discussions in Parliament on any important national business/policy are  enough. What else is Parliament for?Just to get licence to steal?

Unfortunately you can not steal openly.

    Story

“Public anger won’t die down unless the State stops selling itself to corporate interests

“First, Radia is a lobbyist for some of the largest and most powerful companies in India, but lobbyists exist in every free market economy. It is also true Radia cultivated politicians, journalists and industry leaders to persuade them of the reasonableness of her clients’ requests and to intercede on their behalf with ministers and senior officials. But that too was her legitimate function. The tapes have revealed that she lobbied powerful journalists to help her, and many, though not all, agreed. But journalists have acted as intermediaries on important issues before.”

It cannot even be claimed that A Raja’s indiscriminate allocation of 2G licences did only harm to the country.

Because the fact is that the past six years have seen not only an exponential growth of mobile telephony but also a level of competition among service providers that has brought down the price of phone calls to levels unheard of anywhere else in the world. If we have not heard more about this aspect, it is because the beneficiaries have been the unorganised and unregistered poor.

So, why is India in such turmoil? The answer lies in the cosy relationships within the power elite that the tapes revealed and the fact that none of the people involved were acting in national interest. Radia was not canvassing for a particular policy. She was canvassing for the appointment of a particular person to a particular cabinet post in UPA 2. She was not doing it on behalf of the DMK but for two of the nation’s biggest companies who happen to be facing an oligopolistic telecom market in which most of the business has been cornered by two of their older rivals.

By the same token, while journalists have been part of track-two communications (overt or covert) between Delhi and Tehran, Islamabad and insurgent groups, the common feature was that this was done in national interest. This is something that the journalists who promised to intercede on Raja’s behalf cannot claim.

  • Lawyer par Excellence?

BJP  seems to be worried over Jethmalani’s decision to appear before PAC on 2G scam. Here is the man who wanted Pakistan to be involved  in Kashmir ,which is a part of India.

Look at some of the cases  he represented.

He has a number of high-profile defense cases to his credit as a lawyer (citation). He has taken up unpopular defense cases such as defending the killers of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, people involved in market scams (Harshad Mehta and Ketan Parekh), and a host of gangsters and smugglers including the British citizen Daisy Angus who was acquitted of hashish smuggling after serving 5 years in jail. He has also defended death sentence of Mohammad Afzal a Pakistani terrorist convicted for 2001 Indian Parliament attack. He also defended L.K Advani in Hawla Scam. Recently he was in the news for taking up the defense of Manu Sharma, prime accused in the Jessica Lall murder case, however, he failed to get Manu Sharma acquitted. He is now going to be defending Lalit Modi – IPL Chairman.[3][4][5][6].

  • Niira Radia and I went to Zurich to open accounts-BJP links?

Rao Dheeraj Singh knows a lot about Niira Radia. He was her business partner. He later spent almost two years in prison, accused by Radia of kidnapping her son Karan. Speaking exclusively to INDIA TODAY in his first media interaction after the leaking of the Niira Radia tapes, he makes revelations about her business dealings between 1995 and 2002, a period in which Singh was closely associated with Radia’s Crown Mart International (India) Pvt Ltd.

Singh first met Radia in 1994 when he was working as a traffic supervisor with Sahara Airlines. She was a consultant with Sahara. She hired him for her own company, Crown Mart. They moved to Bombay in 1995, where Radia briefly dabbled in films and a hotel business.

Singh recounts his version of what he believes was her first major deal after moving back to Delhi, “In 1997-98 when we moved back to Delhi, Modiluft had gone bust. We were approached by KLM UK who had leased out two aircrafts to Modiluft but they had been impounded because of pending dues to oil companies. KLM UK mandated Crown Mart to handle the court case for them. You know how things work in India. We worked through lawyers. A Delhi court passed the order to release the aircraft. I clearly remember that she received a call that by the next morning, there would be a stay on the order. At that time the UK pilots were all ready and she ensured that the aircraft took off the very same evening. The case carried on but nobody bothered. Our company was paid Rs 2.5 crore to get the aircraft released.”

In what is public knowledge, Radia’s influence began to grow when the BJP-led NDA came to power in 1998 and Ananth Kumar was appointed Union civil aviation minister. Claims Singh, “It was actually in the BJP regime that everything started going right for us. After the KLM UK deal, a lot of companies started approaching her. We sold some helicopters to Sahara. The Airbus Consortium started supporting her. Karnataka and Maharashtra governments were sold Eurocopters. There was a BJP Government in Maharashtra. Radia had a good relationship with Ananth Kumar. He managed the whole thing for us.” Singh claims to recall meeting a senior leader (name withheld) during the Eurocopter deal. “I remember when this Eurocopter deal with the Maharashtra Government was being negotiated, Niira and I went to Nagpur together to meet the leader, who facilitated it,” alleges Singh.

Singh makes damaging allegations about Radia even going to the extent of saying, “Niira used to get a lot of information and then send it to her clients in France and all over the place. At one point, she wanted to get into defence deals as well.”

More deals meant more commissions. “Niira, Karuna (her sister) and I travelled to Zurich to open bank accounts. I can give you my passport as evidence. I can come to Delhi and give you the name of the Zurich bank where the accounts were opened,” claims Singh (Radia is a PIO). He adds, “The money earned from the deals struck between 1998 and 2001 was getting accrued in Zurich and Channel islands. I don’t know the amount but it was substantial.”

We contacted Radia several times to answer these allegations. Instead, she questioned our ‘better judgement’ on carrying statements made by someone she called a ‘convict’. Later, a communication was sent on her behalf denying Singh’s specific allegation on her Swiss Bank accounts.

Singh talks about the one occasion he believes Radia went one-up on Jet Airways promoter Naresh Goyal by allegedly blocking an aircraft deal for Jet. Alleges Singh, “Jet wanted to buy the aircraft. And she managed to get their permission blocked in the civil aviation ministry. Naresh Goyal was never happy with her. So she approached the French aircraft manufacturer ATR and told them that your aircraft will not be given permission because the aviation ministry has blocked it. The French company told us that okay, we will give you money. Naresh Goyal will not talk to you and he will not give you any money. But we will give you the money and you get the aircraft cleared. Rs 1.85 crore was given to us.”

Singh alleges that Radia’s close ties with the BJP Government extended beyond Kumar. “The BJP Government allotted a huge piece of land to Niira’s trust in Vasant Kunj in 2002. L.K. Advani came to lay the foundation stone of the trust.”

On how Radia met Ratan Tata, Singh’s version of events is as follows, “Singapore Airlines wanted to increase their flights to Delhi and Bombay. Niira got the bilateral agreements done for Singapore Airlines. It was around this time that the company put in a word for Niira to Mr Tata.”

Dheeraj says that he began to drift away from Radia at about the time she landed the Tata Group’s PR accounts. It wasn’t smooth. Claims Singh, “There was a sizeable amount of money stuck in Zurich. And a portion of that was to come to me. She owed me Rs 1.2 crore and there was a big argument. She told me there were a lot of problems and she couldn’t get the money back into the country. And a portion of it had to go to a BJP politician as well. Hawala and money laundering were her domain.” These are allegations which need further investigation.
