Diatom frustule Anne Weston, LRI, CRUK It looks a radioactive hazard warning. In fact, this delicate assembly of triangles is a scanning electron micrograph of a diatom. Diatoms are single-cell organisms that are one of the most common types of phytoplanktons and play a major role in sustaining life on Earth. Although usually too small to be seen with the naked, phytoplankton form green blooms on the sea and convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into oxygen. They also provide food for a large number of aquatic species. Diatoms are encased within a hard cell wall made from silica, which is known as a frustule and is composed of two halves. Frustules have a variety of patterns, pores, spines and ridges, which are used to determine genera and species. The health of communities of phytoplankton is measured carefully by scientists because they provide useful indications of environmental conditions such as water quality 
Bacteria biofilm Fernan Federici, Tim Rudge, PJ Steiner and Jim Haseloff This is Bacillus subtilis, a rod-shaped bacterium commonly found in soil. Distinct lineages of bacteria expressing different fluorescent proteins were initially mixed randomly on a petri dish. As bacteria grow, they organise themselves into reproducible patterns and shapes that can be predicted with mathematical models. The researchers took this image as part of a project designing artificial genetic circuits for pattern formation in bacterial colonies and plant tissues 
Cell division Kuan-Chung Su, Cancer Research UK, London Research Institute This striking, spiralling sequence was created using time-lapse photography to show the process of division – known as mitosis – of a cancer cell over a period of an hour. In the centre of the shot, the first stage of the process is captured, with the red DNA encircled by a near-perfectly round cell membrane. The DNA begins to duplicate, and to separate within the cyan enclosure. With the identical copies of DNA at opposite ends of the cell, gradually the membrane contracts. The subtle developments from one snapshot to the next follow the two daughter cells as they split away from one another, ready to undergo the same process themselves roughly 16 hours later 
Lavender leaf Annie Cavanagh These may look like tomatoes ripening on the vine but scale is misleading. This scanning electron micrograph shows a lavender leaf (Lavandula) that is only 200 microns across, roughly a 50th of a centimetre. Lavender is native to much of Africa, Asia and Europe and is a favourite ornamental plant in Britain. It produces an oil that has a distinctive sweetness and is used in balms, salves, perfumes, cosmetics and topical applications. It is also claimed that it can be used to aid sleep and to alleviate anxiety. The oily secrets of lavender are revealed in this striking image which shows the surface of a leaf covered with fine hair-like outgrowths made from specialised epidermal cells called non-glandular trichomes. These protect the plant against pests and reduce evaporation from the leaf. Glandular trichomes are also present, containing the oil produced by the plant 
Intracranial recording Robert Ludlow, UCL Institute of Neurology, London This surface of the human brain in explicit detail and comes from an epileptic patient in the lead-up to a major surgical operation. The image marks the first step in a process of analysis required to identify the area of the brain that needs to be removed. When it was taken, the patient was fitted with an electrode grid to monitor and record the activity of the brain for up to two weeks. After this time, surgeons were able to identify the section of the brain responsible for epileptic fits, and remove it. 
Chicken embryo Vincent Pasque, University of Cambridge The ethereal organism in the centre of this image is a newly fertilised chicken, captured just two days into its embryonic existence. The surrounding haven of blood vessels, known as a vasculature, acts as a tiny life support mechanism to the developing creature, which at this stage is roughly the size of a five pence piece. This network of veins and arteries connects the chicken to the rest of the egg, enabling the embryo to feed on the rich underlying yolk. The embryo already displays a tiny heart and brain. The trailing bottom half of the organism will become the chicken’s body on which its wings and legs will emerge 
Xenopus laevis oocytes VINCENT PASQUE, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE This confocal micrograph shows stage V-VI oocytes (800-1000 micron diameter) of an African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis), a model organism used in cell and developmental biology research. Each oocyte is surrounded by thousands of follicle cells, shown in the image by staining DNA blue. Blood vessels, which provide oxygen to the oocyte and follicle cells, are shown in red. The ovary of each adult female Xenopus laevis contains up to 20 000 oocytes. Mature oocytes are approximately 1.2 mm in diameter, much larger than the eggs of many other species. 
Cancer cells in motion SALIL DESAI, SANGEETA BHATIA, MEHMET TONER AND DANIEL IRIMIA, KOCH INSTITUTE FOR INTEGRATIVE CANCER RESEARCH, MIT This image depicts the chemotactic behaviour of cancer cells using a combination of fluorescence and phase contrast microscopy. Chemotaxis, or the directed motion of cells in the presence of a small-molecule gradient, is essential in the spread of cancer from one area of the body to another. This process is known as the metastatic cascade. The individual channels are 12 microns wide, approximately one-tenth the width of a single human hair. 
Connective tissue ANNE WESTON, LONDON RESEARCH INSTITUTE, CANCER RESEARCH UK This false-coloured scanning electron micrograph shows connective tissue removed from a human knee during arthroscopic surgery. Individual fibres of collagen can be distinguished and have been highlighted by the creator using a variety of colours. The horizontal field width of the image is 16 microns. Texas Plant Explosion Photo Essay Videos
A massive explosion at the West Fertilizer Co. rocked the small town of West, Texas, late Wednesday night, leaving more than 100 people reported injured and many feared dead.
“It was like a nuclear bomb went off,” said West Mayor Tommy Muska to CNN.
According to Sgt. Patrick Swanton of the Waco Police Department, the first call of a fire came in at 7:29 PM local time. Firefighters and other emergency workers responded to the call and began evacuating the area.
Minutes later, the devastating explosion occured. The first call of the explosion came in at 7:53 PM local time said Swanton.
More than 100 victims have been treated at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, Texas. And at least 60 more have been treated at Providence Hospital.
Toxic, flammable and dangerous: What is an anhydrous ammonia explosion?
“The West Fertilizer facility suffered an anhydrous ammonia explosion, according to Waco Assistant Fire Chief Don Yeager.
That term applies to ammonia in its liquid or gas state. Anhydrous ammonia is classified as toxic and dangerous for the environment – and is extremely flammable and is capable of forming highly explosive mixtures.
If Ammonia is exposed to iodine, Nitrogen triiodide is formed – which is described as a high explosive – capable of exploding out to six miles out.
According to Yeager, the explosion affected other parts of the fetilizer plant too – which could have accelerated the mixing of toxic materials. Anhydrous ammonia is transported as a liquid at temperatures below -28°F.
In the event of a large spill it can form a toxic vapor cloud that is heavier than air until its temperature increases.
Anhydrous ammonia is corrosive to copper, silver, aluminum, zinc, and alloys. It reacts with body moisture, so it may burn body tissue – skin, eyes, mouth, throat, lungs, and stomach – on contact, if inhaled or swallowed.”

“I will confirm there have been fatalities,” said Swanton who estimated 5 to 15 were thought to be dead.
Swanton also said that between 3 and 5 firefighters were missing.
There were a “tremendous amount of injuries and we do have confirmed fatalities,” said D.L. Wilson, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Safety at a conference late Wednesday night, He was not able to provide specific numbers.
The blast was so massive that it registered as a 2.1 magnitude earthquake, according to the USGS.
